I honestly don't even like fishing with my buddies all that much. When I'm riding solo every decision is up to me without having to debate or whatever. If I want to hit up a spot, I hit up a spot. If I want to move, I can move - plus there's the added benefit of not having to talk to someone haha

First outing of the year last weekend, I caught my PB largemouth and yellow perch, that perch is the biggest I've personally seen in my area. Both caught on the same clouser I tied this winter! That bass is officially my first fish on a fly I tied myself.

I've been using 8/0 uni thread, and when tightening up the deer hair it's easy to break the thread. Very frustrating. Do y'all recommend a specific kind of thread for this, or is this a technique thing that I just need to work around (or both?)

I did watch that! I haven't tied this with a hackle yet, first one was just CDC, 2nd + 3rd I added dubbing. I've got about 50 hooks I'm going to dedicate to just the caddis so I've got some room to play with different patterns and colors.

Update: tied my first fly! CDC & deer hair caddis - I know it’s not the prettiest. I need to stack the hairs better and work on a cleaner head.

I wear this vest and I have a cheap piscifun fanny pack that holds bulkier stuff. I'm debating on getting a sling pack instead of the vest + fanny pack setup

I used to have a 10 foot Ascend sit on top, but I grew up using a canoe and I missed that. Last spring I got an Old Town 119, and my favorite part of this setup is it's wicked light and easy to set up/break down.

Those shops are a bit of a drive for me, so I'll likely stick to online. I don't know of any local fly tying clubs in the area, in fact I've never seen anyone fly fishing in my adventures lol, spinning gear is by far more popular in my area. That would be wicked! I'm at the stage where I don't...

I bought a Griffin vice and a little wooden workstation. I have a set of tools I want to buy (Togens premium set). I really just need to get some materials and get started. I want to start by learning to tie the elk hair caddis and the clouser minnow. Any tips on where to get materials?
