if you could live anywhere on the sound..?

I can see the appeal of Port Townsend if you're wired that way for sure, but it fails when it comes to other criteria. Based on those inputs, and painting in broad strokes I'd say that you can probably remove the following parts of the Puget Sound from consideration: -Hood Canal -Anything on...

if you could live anywhere on the sound..?

Think it'd help if you could add some of the things that are important to you in order of importance. Lots of amazing places around the Sound but none of them is going to offer everything to everyone. Risks setting off a bit of a dumpster-fire - but if being around like-minded folks with a...

    NFR Buy or lease vehicles?

With the price of new cars - new trucks in particular - I've started to wonder if more folks might start contemplating just putting a new engine or engine + transmission in their vehicles instead of buying new if the rest of the vehicle is in good shape.

So - you found a bait ball....

Very helpful insights. Will give those a try the next time I find myself in that sort of situation for sure. Thanks!

Non-Fly Any very recent tuna reports?

Visual Aid: https://www.angelfire.com/wa/salmonid/lovelace99.html Had the same thought about this fly when I saw all of the tiny saurie on the cleaning table.

So - you found a bait ball....

Rolled up on an astounding conglomeration of birds, bait, and seams this past Friday (water was literally boiling with bait) and found myself thinking "Okay - so now what?" Didn't think matching the billion baitfish would be the best approach, so I stuck with a pink-over-white clouser, cast to...

    Winston rods at Costco..whodda thunk

All a matter of perspective, I suppose. From my perspective it seems like things have worked out pretty well since over the course of my lifetime there's been a massive improvement in the quality and selection in every category of gear at inflation-adjusted price-points that are almost...

    Winston rods at Costco..whodda thunk

It's been ~30 years since I read TWON but think Smith was using it in the milder "collaborate in private" sense of the word. It's a famous quote that I remember from reading the book because it was a pithy and mildly amusing observation that there's a pretty universal human impulse to want a...

    Winston rods at Costco..whodda thunk

“People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.” -Adam Smith

    A Kiwi Layover

If you're seriously considering a trip to the area, try to get yourself a copy of "Volcanic Trout" by Brendan Mathews. Great resource that covers pretty much every river that drains into the lake as well as lake fishing and areas adjacent to Lake Taupo.

    Tuna 2023

I'll chime in with some semi-coherent ramblings from my first trip. -I was equal parts excited and apprehensive about the trip. Excited by the prospect of finally heading offshore and connecting with albacore on the 12 weight outfit that been gathering dust in my garage for the past two years...

    Tuna 2023

Funny but not surprising that I was so preoccupied with everything else going on that I had no idea that anyone was taking pictures. I'm pretty sure there could have been a marching band performing on the foredeck right at that moment and I wouldn't have heard a single note....

Steelhead Counts at Bonneville: 80 Years of Data

These numbers probably require some pretty generous error bars, particularly in the early years, but I thought they were still pretty interesting nonetheless. https://flyfishusa.com/blog/Columbia-River-Steelhead-Runs-80-years-of-ladder-counts Year Total Steelhead Unclipped 1938 107003...

    Oops! Fiberglass Hull Repair Question.

Thanks for the suggestions. Think I'll go with the "All of the Above" approach and do the quick and dirty repair first and follow with the textbook repair in October! That kit looks like a great option for the latter of the two options.

    kill nets

The first time I read this editorial *opposing* passage of a 1995 ballot measure calling for the elimination of non-tribal gillnets I had to do a triple-headshake when I saw the list of signatories. Would love to hear insiders describe how it was that 'The Friends of the Earth' stepped forward...

    Oops! Fiberglass Hull Repair Question.

Made a boneheaded mistake on the way to the water today and wound up with a nice little puncture/crack just under the waterline. The official Whaler repair guide suggests a pretty involved repair that requires cutting out the fiberglass around the damage, removing a thin layer of foam from...

    Republican Debate

On the four dimensional political-axis thingy (libertarian/authoritarian are on the Y axis and conservative/liberal are on the Y axis) I always wind up in the "Right Libertarian" quadrant (which has been interesting since I've gone to school, mostly hung-out with, lived and worked in...

    Tuna 2023

When I worked in the lab we'd use a dry-ice + ethanol bath to flash-freeze stuff when we didn't have any liquid nitrogen handy. I was going to say I'd only use that technique if I lived someplace where I could get food-grade ethanol but it looks like WA is one of the few states where you can get...
