    Any Panhandlers here?

My wife’s family is from northern Idaho. We have visited them a few times. Not bad people as far as family goes. Several N. Idaho family members want us to move there. They have gone as far as to send us ads for properties they think we should buy. Nice country. If I was younger and healthier I...

    Skagit-centric conservation/ bio thread

I’ve met Larry and talked with him several times. Some think he is crazy. He might be a bit eccentric but he isn’t crazy. Larry has put together likely the most extensive collection of Skagit River flood literature in existence. There is tons of information on this site...

    Skagit-centric conservation/ bio thread

Back in the eighties, early nineties there was a study done on the viability to moving the dikes back. Imminent domain takes care of a lot of the legal land issues although you are correct in that the law suits would be crazy. The main culprits blocking such a project is simply the cost and...

    Skagit-centric conservation/ bio thread

As far as flood control goes dredging is a red herring. Think about it. Look at the Skagit. How much material will need to be removed from the river bottom to make any difference in the height of say fifty year flood? The river will crest somewhere around forty feet in Mt. Vernon. Minor flooding...

    Skagit-centric conservation/ bio thread

When the white man arrived in the Skagit Valley he asked the locals where he should build his house. They told him above the high water mark on the trees. So what did the white man do? He cut down all the trees. Many Skagit farmers admit the dikes were built too close together and many or at...

    Skagit-centric conservation/ bio thread

We dammed the system with 5 gigantic concrete plugs. We diked and channelized the entire lower river. We cut every tree down from the mouth to the head waters and along every tributary. We pollute the river with our sewage and agriculture runoff, not to mention what comes from the roads and...

    Skagit-centric conservation/ bio thread

I look at the dams from an average angler’s point of view. I’m not smart enough to understand all of the complexities. Common sense tells me that when we blocked the river with gigantic concrete plugs it screws up everything above and below those gigantic concrete plugs.

I had help. This happened above the tidal influenced portion. A little above Nookachamps the river is very dynamic with several braids. Every year it changes. It was fall and we were fishing for cutts. I came around the big bend and chose the middle braid. Wrong. I heard the pump starting to...

I’ve done it. Not fly out of the boat, but I have gotten stuck on a sand bar. Aluminum sticks to sand real well. It was a bugger getting unstuck.

    Lower Skagit March Opener

Alder flies are a small black fly and is not an aquatic insect if memory serves me. I knew once what the little bugs were but have long forgotten. Any dark fly say size 12 or 14 would work. The actual ”hatch” is difficult to pin down. It really isn’t a hatch like most would think. The bug...

…and deep Vs are tippy. Also, a V hull can dig into a wave during a turn and cause a sudden lurch or broach. Every hull design has advantages and disadvantages. Some say a flat bottom can cause cavitation by trapping air under the boat and delivering that air to the motor. Likely more of an...
