The time I can break off an indicator is when fishing a lake at depth. No issue. But then a hatch starts in shallow and the fish are feeding shallower than the length of tippet. So I can rerig or just move my indicator onto the tippet. That is when I can break one off. AFWIW oros indicators are...

This all boils down to one thing. TIppet size. Lighter get more bites but also get broken off in the weeds now and then. Go heavier and get less bites. Sure I could rerig when I change depths so that the indicator is always in a heavier section. But I'd rather spend more time fishing.
