    SW MT

Last week I took what has become a nearly annual late June trip to Montana. Mostly fishing a real zipper lip of a river that runs through the town of Ennis, which has only four fly shops. Ideally I'd time this time each year to coincide with the hatch of giant stone flies commonly referred to...

NFR New wildfires popping up on a daily basis!

I think that is impossible to know due to so many factors affecting certainty. However, I also think a reasonable statistical inference could be drawn that leads to "most probably."

    Northern BC & Yukon

When I was fishing in Alaska, I thought it would be fun to add pike to my list of fish caught. I was disabused of that in short order. After catching a few and realizing how God awful they stink, I didn't want to touch one again. So when I saw a large one, I cast out a deer hair mouse to...

    SFR DEET

I've been using it for years. I bought a gallon jug - more economical than the smaller bottles Sawyer sells. I spray my sun hoodies, and they still protect me from sun burn. After it's dry, I can't smell anything on the treated clothes.

    NFR World Cup

Sometimes, when you wait nearly an hour-and-a-half for someone to score, you want it to last as long as is humanly possible.

    Non-Fly Baker lake sockeye 2026

Sockeye movement into the Baker trap is heavily influenced by the magnitude of water releases from Lower Baker Dam. That could explain the swings in daily counts. The overall shape of the curve is normal, however.

    Non-Fly Baker lake sockeye 2026

Those Columbia sockeye have some different and serious obstacles affecting survival that Baker sockeye don't have to contend with. I have a tight schedule but plan to join WW for the first two days of the season. Note to self: do not forget the secret bait.

    Inconsistent bite (for me)

Hmmm, I thought that lake was only open on the days when the wind is blowing against what ever way you're going in the channel. Yer livin' a blessed life Buzzy!

    Thermocline fishing?

There certainly is a temperature gradient in lakes. By diving into lakes I always noticed that the water was much cooler under the upper two feet of warmer water. I thought I learned that thermoclines tend to set up in the range of 50 to 56 feet of depth. I guess I thought that was sorta'...

    International Ordering Issues

On June 19 I ordered a couple ultra-light alcohol stoves for backpacking from a specialty manufacturer and vendor who happened to be in England. They arrived one week later on June 26. I received daily email updates tracking the order status and location even though I hadn't requested any...

NFR New wildfires popping up on a daily basis!

For the majority of my life I seldom had to plan fishing trips or family vacations around wildfires or prevailing wildfire smoke direction. For the past 10 or 12 years, it's become an almost annual part of the planning process. I think the times, they are a changin'.

How many fly reels do I need?

Carry on with quantum physics all you want, but I still maintain that the simple formula of CI (current inventory) + 1 is always the correct number needed. This formula has been working for me for over 50 years, and no error discovered yet!

    SFR DEET

I always hated DEET and still do. I was reluctant to use it. But I realized I hate, hate, hate skeeters even more! And black flies too! So I resigned myself to bathing in DEET as needed and soaking my clothes in it to repel pesky damn skeeters. It was after my trip to Kamchatka that I...

NFR AI - How It Will Affect Jobs In The Next 5 years

FBB, I disagree. If you've been observing politics and capitalism since the SCOTUS decision in Citizen United, then you have seen that wealthy capitalists are simply buying the politicians who will be docile servants and restructuring the political landscape to best serve their interests at...

How many fly reels do I need?

Current inventory plus one is always the correct answer.

    Rain

The wind is howling this morning upriver where WW is camped. We're screwed as far as fishing on the Madison goes today. Dang! Yesterday was the best salmon fly action we've had this week. I might mosey over to the Ruby and see if the wind is calm enough for me to fish.

Gear Review Ross Colorado LT flat spring

I had a spring break on one of my Ross Colorado reels (V 1.0) last year. I emailed Ross and got a reply email saying some replacements were in the mail to me. Since the reel is over 20 years old and gets a fair amount of use, I have no complaint. Even the heavier of the two drag springs is...
