    Sad news out of Colorado.

Greg, I wasn't going to tell this story, but you will probably get a chuckle out of it, so... The months leading up to that 3rd Place Books talk by John, I was in the midst of a head first deep dive into learning how to work on old bamboo rods. I'd picked up from Plug Ugly my first ever bamboo...

    Sad news out of Colorado.

I got to meet John at a book signing at 3rd Place Books about 10 years ago. But of course, it felt like I had "known" him for decades prior from reading his down to earth, everyman's fly fisherman stories. I'm deeply saddened by his passing.

I think that rod is a "Bill McGuire."

He just took in a nice 7-1/2' made in England bamboo rod, but I didn't recognize the maker's name. I want to say Ben McAlister or something like that. Nice rods pass through his shop on occasion, especially now that Plug Ugly and the guy who used to be in the basement store at the antiques...

I'm planning to fish a certain spring creek in a week that often has #20 BWO's hatching...I use 6x and a size 20 BWO emerger fly which sometimes works. Hmmm...of course, the fish run to 16-17" and I'd be petrified that they would snap that little 6' rod in two. I know I know, bamboo is...

Thanks Tim. It's interesting that Ray made one rod even shorter, at 5'. The 6' rod length seems very, very short. I once owned an Orvis Deluxe that was a 6' rated as a 5 weight. It felt clubby to me. This 6' 3/4 feels about like it should for such a small rod.

I'm back! But not for long, heading out again very soon for another couple weeks. That small creek sounds fun! But I'll more likely break out the other rod I bought from Maltby a few months ago...did you also see the 7-1/2' 4wt Hardy Deluxe 1st gen graphite? I really, really like casting...

I stumbled across a tiny 6' 3/4 wt rod by local legend Ray Gould. It weighs a mere 2.4oz and has a 12/64 ferrule. I don't have a three weight line but it cast well with the 4 wt Wulff Bamboo line I have on hand. The rod is marked "RR-157-6" which hopefully someone can look up in his book for...

    Farlows

Greg, that reel is beautiful! Unfortunately, those Brits chose the wrong side of the road, so to speak, when choosing which hand to wind with, LOL! After driving nearly two weeks in England I got somewhat used to driving on their side of the roads and traffic circles and never crashed our...

    Farlows

Apparently the Farlows brand is all haberdashery now, no more reels or other gear. But the Sage and Simms gear was plentiful and the reel case had a lot of Hardy, of course!

    Farlows

Hmmmm, if only I could steer Dave’s fly tying attention away from classics and into buzzers, my indicator catching rate would go way up!

    Farlows

They DID have baseball caps that said Farlows, and T-shirts too. But after guesstimating the US$ after exchange, the Tshirt would have cost $55, and then only Dave Westburg would have known what "Farlows" was anyways, so I skipped those, LOL! But I did buy a box of 10 "buzzers" which are the...

    Farlows

Got to browse through the Farlows store in Trafalgar Square, London. A few things stood out. First, there were more Sage rods than any other brand, even Hardy’s. Second, they said they love American made fly fishing products, especially Sage and Simms. Next, they said how very lucky I was to...

A little bit of fishing in CO

With fish that big, you'd think you were using a "Crane" to bring them up. ;)

Dave, you sure know how to show an old GV8040 a good time! Kudos on a magnificent hike, campout, brookie-fest and coffee brew. Cheers!
