Thanks as usual for the excellent photos Steve! Back during my days of gainful employment, the bittern's booming, guttural "pump-er-lunk" calls were one of my favorite signs that spring had arrived.

We had a pretty good rain event here near Lincoln City - 2.20" in the Coastal Mountains (Salmon River watershed) and 1.34" here at the house. Most of the local rivers have gone from at or near record low flows to record high flows for the date.

Depending on your budget, you might was to check out Leupold. The company is based in Beaverton Oregon though I think they no longer assemble binoculars in the US. I believe their higher end ones are made in Japan. I've had a pair of Leupold 10x42 Gold Ring binoculars for about 30 years...

Got up to 84 today in Neotsu (about 1.5 miles from the ocean)... way too hot.

We are up to .79" in Neotsu just outside Lincoln City. The hydrographs for all of the local rivers have bumped and in some cases nearly doubled. This rain event has provided relief for watersheds that have been at or near record low flows.

There are some late spring/early summer chinook to be had right now on the Oregon Coast. Our two daughters visited (a week apart) and I'll be damn if we didn't get fish for both of them. There's almost zero angling pressure now but that's about to change.

Crescent City on the California side of the Oregon/CA border was probably hit the hardest. The way the harbor is configured makes it particularly vulnerable (it was completely destroyed in 2011).

It's definitely one of the sulphur butterfly species. It's a little hard to tell without seeing the topside - but there does look to be some black edging so I would go with clouded sulphur.
