    Bristol Bay

Yeah - I was looking for Rainbows and caught quite a few grayling on that... They hammer top water more - but I caught a lot on that. If I had to fish 1 fly - that black and white Dolly Llama gets it done for all trout.

Prepare for the influx of dirtbags!

This is the dirtbag thread?! I swing both ways... I broke my favorite Coho rod last week. It still makes me want to cry. Anyone have a Sage SP 370-3 out there, that they no longer use? I love that little travel rod.

    Bristol Bay

Another trip in the books. I don't know how it happened... In an area that had not had a day of sunshine before the trip, we had 5 straight days. A rarity. The water warmed up a bit near the end of that and the trout bite turned on. Had fun floating, camping, fishing and just generally...

    Bristol Bay

Where are you headed? I am going up next week. Rivers are on the high side in the Kuskowin delta, so that may be an issue on some smaller tribs (as far as camping and fast water with sweepers, etc). I just want it to be consistent so I don't have to run for it in the middle of the night...

    Fishing with a dog?

I have been training my Bernedoodle pup for hiking and fishing. Recently took him up to the Meadow Lake Camp. He did great. He did go into the drink fairly quickly when looking over the front of the boat. He learned and didn't do that again. The handle on the PFD is great for fishing a...

BC trip (7 days and lots of pics!)

I had a great time. Super friendly people. My daughter was having too much fun throwing spoons, so my goal of fully converting her to a fly rod didn't happen. Her enjoying time outside and fishing did though! My favorite moment was when a monster hammered her spoon and jumped several...

BC trip (7 days and lots of pics!)

Looking at the maps of the area I did not realize how close this was to Wells Gray. I canoed Clearwater and Azure as a teenager. One of my lasting memories as a kid. The really solidified my interest in fishing. Would love to go back to Rainbow falls now. I remember that campsite as...

BC trip (7 days and lots of pics!)

Thanks for the advice. I'll be in my CRV - if I need to walk, I'll walk. I'll bring my GPS and download the Gaia layers!

BC trip (7 days and lots of pics!)

This is getting me excited! Headed to MLFC for the first time. Taking my 10 year old daughter on Thursday.

    Bristol Bay

That is a good idea. My daughter lost her iphone at the terminal and they kept telling me they didn't have it - that the airport would have it. I tracked it to their luggage center away from the airport. I just wouldn't leave until they looked for it. I was afraid it would move again and...

Alaska River Float (Goodnews) Tips and Suggestions

We use a lightweight bear fence and leave food in camp. Don't know if it is needed, but we have left camp for hours and never had anything ransacked. We had bears walk through our camp several times this year; they are keyed on fish. Pretty fun to watch them stick their heads underwater to...

Alaska River Float (Goodnews) Tips and Suggestions

You going with Papabear, or someone like that? They give you a bunch of info, but you do it on your own?

Alaska River Float (Goodnews) Tips and Suggestions

A side note on the camping.... You won't want to camp on the tundra anyway. By rules you have to be on a sandbar when off the Refuge. Really not ideal to set up a camp above high water on the Tundra.... You'll see when you get there. If the water is that high, your trip is over and...

Alaska River Float (Goodnews) Tips and Suggestions

Are you going on the main fork or the Kuklatim (Middle) fork? I have done it several times on my own. Are you self guiding this? Lot's of sandbars on the Goodnews. If you are doing this on your own, pick ones that are as high as possible. Some look great, but only have like 6 inches of...

    Bristol Bay

On a side note... If you ever fish one of the Bristol Bay rivers up high, catching the large Grayling on top water is pretty damn fun. I used a small orange muddler and they hammered it many times. Grayling in this area average close to 20, and there are tons of them.

    Bristol Bay

Another trip in the books. Lots of firsts on this one. Not all good.... Alaska Airlines lost a bag on the way in. Unfortunately it had a boat in it. Luckily we were able to find one to rent locally. The bag is still MIA. I am still not sure how you lose a single bag? A luggage...

    North Cascades High Lakes

Thanks Phil. That view is where I was headed. Love it! I have come down that shoot before. It's steep! Great views.

    Bristol Bay

Not a trip report yet! Getting excited though. Head out early Wednesday and the weather looks promising. Water is cool now, so will be interesting to see how the trout are reacting. Coho are in. Going to be fun. 12 days on a remote river. Got a new tent that should be perfect for...

    North Cascades High Lakes

Curious if anyone was out this weekend? I planned a 3 night trip to multiple lakes and the photo is the first one. This is from 2 weekends ago. I have been hiking here a long time and this is the first time water has been frozen solid at this elevation in mid July. Want to go back out and...
