    talk to me about center-pinning

When I first started centerpinning it was for steelhead, so some of the size/weights below may need adjustment. First, buy a reel. I bought a raven matrix for my first. It seemed like a good quality entry level reel to me at the time, and it has held up well since then. Next buy a rod. I...

    Favorite Bobbers / Floats

I used to use clear drifts but they got hard to find. I've used beau-mac torpedo, both clear plastic and foam, for years now with no complaints.

    Winter Olympics Watch...

I love the winter Olympics. I will watch all I can, but especially cross country skiing and ski jumping. I'm skeptical about China and the fake snow.

    Yakima River Float

Other than above Bullfrog, all the floats I mentioned in my prior post I've done in a 16' drift boat.

    Yakima River Float

Above Bullfrog can have some tricky spots. I've done it in a raft many times but never a hard boat. Always during the summer. Below Bullfrog there are or were many, many log jams. South to State is pretty straightforward. Below State there is or was a log jam that you need to avoid. It...

I used to love fishing some of the smaller creeks in your neck of the woods, back when they planted them.

    Drift Fishing

Drift fishing is what I learned and all I did until I got into pinning in the late 2000's. I caught my first steelhead, a winter hatchery fish, on the Raging River on a black/red/white aerofly. For rigging: 12 lb main maxima crystal ivory (easier to track than ultragreen; cheaper too) down to...

    Non-Fly Mooching?

Not sure it is a funny story, but a story nonetheless. I was out this past summer at Jeff. Dead calm day and there were ribbons and pockets of small red amphipod-looking things on the surface, with large schools of dogfish and some herring showing on the surface as they gulped them down. I...

    surf perch & clam digging

I hate surf perch. I've tried multiple times and can count the number I've caught on 1 hand. It's a hate thing whenever I try for them nowadays, which is rare. Its one of those fisheries where I've yet to hit the jackpot day.

    Non-Fly Mooching?

I mooch. Fish out of Shilshole mostly in a hi-laker with Norwegian flag on the back. I always bring brined herring and a sabiki rod. I'll fish the brined until I locate good bait then load up on fresh if I can. I feel confident with both but if I had my choice I would use fresh. For reels I...
