I would say 4wt, I can remember people saying either go even or odd. Most of the time the weight of the rod is for how you want to fish. Use the 4 for dries and small wet flies. Use the 6 for lobbing bobbers and streamers.

There really isn't anything to replace experience. The more you hook the more you'll know what's working. If you want to get better at catching them on the fly rod leave the downriggers at home ;).
