    How fast can I troll?

From my experience, when trolling somewhat fast, doing a strip and release presentation with your fly and line can draw strikes from trout. Bass? They’re too sedentary and localized to find when moving from one place to another.

NFR Has anyone heard from Old Man Jim? Update: RIP OMJ. Give ‘em hell wherever you are!

RIP OMJ. Makes me sad he’s gone. He was one of last active members of WFF, still posting here, from when I first started fly fishing. It sure was lively with a cast of very colorful characters back then, with only a few survivors still around here. Jim was definitely one of the standouts and...

    Synthetic Polar Bear Fur

Cool new textile that replicates thermal and optical qualities of polar bear fur. I didn’t post this science news in the Fly Tying sub forum for a couple of reasons. One, the textile is probably a good several years up the pipeline from your local fly shop, if at all. Two, tiers love...

    Float tube repair

You may need to first clean off the old adhesive—perhaps with acetone. Just don’t breathe the stuff, if you can. You want a clean surface for the new adhesive.

    Alaska’s Fisheries Are Collapsing (Politico)

Trawlers are to the ocean as strip mining is to the land. The collateral damage is mind boggling.

    Puget Sound Fly Co Future

When PSFC was originally located in Des Moines, I remember some people coming in to pay for their energy bill. Perhaps the name change was a very long time in coming. 😉

    Go-to Trout Lake Patterns

If you’re tying your own, try making a yellow and olive BH-WB on a #10 4xl hook. I had a winter when that combo was scoring jumbo trout for me. I’m away from home, so I can’t post a picture my last bugger from that year. That was from my period of tying obnoxious flies to piss off big...

    What Are You Eating?

At most, it could be a sea run trout. Definitely found in rivers and streams. Given that Japan’s geology is very similar to ours, like our steelhead rainbows and SRCs, I wouldn’t be surprised if Japan does have a sea run population of trout. I should ask the chef the next time I visit San Kai.

    What Are You Eating?

Sorry no pictures, but my last meal before joining my ship was at San Kai in Edmonds. Let’s just say that the Sakura masu sushi was the bomb! Yep, it was on the Fresh Sheet. Woot! Edit: For those not familiar with Sakura masu, it’s one of Japan’s native trout—the Cherry trout. I’ve never...

    Favorite Fly Shops

Can you tell me about your experience at Sansui? Japan has some insane fly tiers there.

    What Are You Eating?

Japanese curry with lamb over steamed rice and barley. I forgot to add that I did tweak the original recipe a bit. Added some harissa, ras el hanout, and sherry marinated dried cherries and currants. I made the curry roux a month ago and froze what I didn’t use back then.

    Fishpond customer service

I had the chance to visit Fishpond’s headwater in Denver, CO, back in August. A real nice bunch of characters.

Show off your favorite abandoned-garbage-riverside-homeless-camps of 2022!

Anyone ask the homeless why they are exasperated with life, what brought them there in the first place? After that, it’s the black vortex of the state of how they are that we see. Displacement and the ensuing depression easily becomes its own form of inextricable madness. There are sane...

    Loose seam tape

I smelled the same with my 15 year old Filson waders. Already replaced them, but would love to figure a good way to reseal the leaky seams. Science project in progress…

New 1 min vid: "Allow nature to teach you stillness" -Eckhart Tolle

Not enough has been said about “the stillness” of fly fishing. It might be the main reason I fly fish. It teaches me how best to govern my BS. More like a goal than my reality, but a worthy goal.

    135 mph VW van

I used to have this ‘72 VW bus that the previous owner installed Porsche cams into it. What a fun, party wagon to ride the late 1980s in! The “flying bread box” could actually pass cars on the freeway. I once was trying to make light from the downhill side of Lynn Ave and Eastlake, by the...

    First fish of 2023

Sorry no pics, but, you know, Greenlake. First outing last week at my fav lake was skunk shit on cold toast. Today was hard-earned and won. Two, 2 or 3 second hooks ups and one bump. Also three fly changes. Went through a new pattern (too much UV bling?), a recent go-to pattern, and finally...
