    Merrill Lake Status?

I’m set to return home in a little over a week, after having put in five months on a ship. Fug. I was thinking of checking out Merrill Lake for a camping and fishing trip. Unfortunately, I saw on Google Maps that there was a landslide last year that cut off access to the campground and boat...

    Winter midge surface action!

This is the ideal cat. No guard hairs in this one. Too bad she passed away around 15 years ago.

    Winter midge surface action!

Not the best tie, but I hope you get the idea. The best dubbing is from light gray cat fur without guard hair. This example doesn’t have it. At the eye of the hook, the shuck edge was originally made from a sharp tip of dry fly grizzly hackle.

Election Week Relief at a Westside Lake

Me and a friend fished there on Wednesday. I managed to find one 14” ‘bow. That was it. My friend and another guy who arrived early both struck out. That lake can be fickle in that way.

    Lone Lake conditions anyone..?

No algae at Lone. Pass looked thick with it. Deep green color. I’ve never seen algae that bad before. Made me wonder if something weird got into the water to make it bloom that hard.

    Lone Lake conditions anyone..?

I hit Lone on Wednesday. Arrived around 11:45. In the water at 12:15. Left around 4:00. Real slow but caught a nice fat 14” rainbow about an hour or so before calling it quits. Maybe 1/2 hour to 45 minutes later, got a hard strike that broke off about two feet of 5x tippet. And that was...

    Lone Lake conditions anyone..?

Gonna go there tomorrow afternoon. I plan to post a report. Thinking that lake is shallow enough to have cooled well enough by now to galvanize the trout. Don’t you just love that word, “galvanize”?!

Tons of chases/looks, but no bites

The stripped retrieve of a streamer should emulate fear-induced motion. Imitating food is one thing. Imitating prey is another. Go play with your or any cat to see what I'm talking about. This advice is relevant to trout and their ilk, from my experience.

    Finally getting some Fall temps

Are the shallow lakes cooling quicker than the deeper lakes?

    Over thinking it.

I dunno. I usually hit a lake with one rod with two back up spools: Intermediate, floating, and a fast full sink (type 3 or my current 5/7). Fly line choice depends on lake depth and the season’s water temperature. If I really want to be fully girded, I’ll bring along my 4wt for dedicated...
