For those who know trailer wheel bearings

my boat trailer had oil batch bearing, one of the greatest inventions ever. look into the clear window and make sure the oil was up to the dot, easy. regular bearings, every year they came out and were lubed at a tire place where they could force grease into them.

    What's your favorite rod?

there is no way to answer that question without considering what and where you are fishing. for smaller water, sage LL in 490 is the ticket. for bigger water like the OR Deschutes, sage 7100 designed to fight the wind, also a great bonefish rod. steelhead, my sage 896 and salmon in moving...

    NFR I see a conspiracy here ...

people have gotten lazy and cheap. they graze their sheep and cattle on land that all of us own and pay virtually nothing. then they complain about wolves killings their stock. maybe they need to move their stock our of wolf territory. pretty simple solution but they won't do that because it...

Bombshell Court Victory: Chinook Harvest Harms Southern Resident Killer Whales and Wild Chinook

i think you would be surprised by the very low rate of return of these hatchery fish. so repopulating is a nice word but in reality it does not work!!!

Insect repellant review (DEET and others) WA Post

decades ago i was a part of the AK telecommunications project. my job was to fly into these remote villages and explain what their responsibilities would be for this to work for them. bush planes, super cubs with tundra tires were the common means of transport once things sort of dried out...

    Trolling issues

point your rod opposite your troll path, leave it alone, don't grab it, don't touch it. fish will hook themselves, whey your reel starts to spin a bit, time to put the rod in your hand. that simple. i always trolled with a sink tip line, BTW.

    Trolling issues

never had to do a 'hook set' when trolling. if a fish grabs your trolled fly, it is already hooked.

    Trolling issues

got rid of all of my click and pawl reels. when i would troll a fly, the rod was pointed at the fly. the take was usually firm and final. not sure what is going on when you keep missing fish, not something i encountered. but i did not lift the rod just let the line run and then put the fish...

    Particularly Memorable Takes

i have never seen a midge hatch as intense as on the Missouri below Holter dam. it looked like a cloud of smoke rising from the water going upward. was coming out of the heavy weed growth so basically impossible to present a fly into that maelstrom of insects. had to see it to believe it...

    Particularly Memorable Takes

decades ago, found 'Frank's hole' on the N Santiam. a large shelf on the opposite side and a pretty good cast needed. the most perfect greased line hole you could ever want to fish. steelhead would rise from the shadow of the shelf and gently suck in your fly. remember, in greased line...

    Particularly Memorable Takes

first pacific sail in Costa Rica. a choregraphed movement from the mate pulling the teaser and me presenting the fly, bam and away went 200 yds of backing in the blink of an eye. without an experienced mate, this just does not work very well as i learned in Australia black marlin fishing...

    Finding trout holding water

trout holding water is easy to spot. first sit down, quietly and see if anything is hatching. if yes that should provide a good start. overhanging brush, any rock big enough to split the stream, riffles big and small, standing water are all worth fishing. nothing coming off, i switch to a...

    Trolling issues

never had your lake problems. sharp hooks, bent down barbs, keep the line tight and the rod bent. all the best in the future.
