Grilling salmon (other methods also allowed for discussion) - your go-to recipes and techniques

Another tip ..Bacon. If you have a controlled, smokey, even cooking surface ....wrapping small discs of seafood such as Scallops, Halibut, Lingcod etc. can be a crowd pleaser. With the right bacon and some toothpicks to hold it in place (removing them before serving) ..yummm

Grilling salmon (other methods also allowed for discussion) - your go-to recipes and techniques

I'll add a tip here. If you are having a BBQ, I highly recommend having some "Smokey Links" on the grill, prior to the main meal. I put toothpicks in them and use them as appetizers.

Grilling salmon (other methods also allowed for discussion) - your go-to recipes and techniques

Not space age technology, just a grill that concentrates the heat on the meat surface, rather that cooking it like it was in the oven. The cooking surface is different from a grill. You can't just put wood chips on a grill , they just fall through. With this thing the wood chips don't fall...

Grilling salmon (other methods also allowed for discussion) - your go-to recipes and techniques

No flareups! The heat is even across the the grill! And it makes the "meat" 30% more juicy. But the best thing is, although you are using gas to heat the grill, you can easily add tons of flavor by simply putting wood chips on the grill next to the meat. (no need for any smoker box). So smokey...

Grilling salmon (other methods also allowed for discussion) - your go-to recipes and techniques

I've grilled A LOT of fish over the decades. Year round, almost daily in So CAL. I've owned a ton of grills, starting with a Hibachi Grill in the early 1970s. I have alway preferred the briquet taste, but a gas grill is so much "easier". ..But here is where I finally found BBQ Nirvana... The...

Mola Mola are weird, but also interesting.

I used to see the gill netters unload them with other fish , but only as a by catch because the "yield" was such a small percentage of the gross weight. After watching the video of them being processed and prepared I assume that they are finding their way into the "foody" seafood scene. I like...

Mola Mola are weird, but also interesting.

The first time I saw one of these fish underwater I was diving a California kelp bed in about eight foot of visibility. I looked up to see this huge eye, attached to a giant head. I truly believed that I was seeing a massive sea monster. Then the "head" swam past and I realized that that was all...

    Indicator fishing / Stillwater

Eight years ago, I read Tim's book on Stillwater strategies. It provided me with the information I needed to effectively fish Pass Lake. I saw the indicator fisherman having great success, on that lake, and learned about it from you tube. I learned about throat pumping, using two anchors, and...

    Fishing Thermometers

Fascinating discussion for me.. Dissolved Oxygen. For a few hundred bucks you can get a DO meter but ...... "If a DO meter is too steep of an investment right now, a digital depth thermometer (a thermometer on a marked cord) is a great secondary option. While it won't give you the exact oxygen...

    Fishing Thermometers

I did some looking. It seems the the digital alternative is about $150-$250 and called fish hawk DT. It seems like it would be fun, but for about $20 you can get a deptherm. But the Fish Hawk DT would be a very cool Christmas gift for a Stillwater fly fisherman.

    Fishing Thermometers

I will say that I often have to force myself to fiddle around with this thing. It's hard to put down the fly rod even for a couple of minutes. I have it tied to my float tube with a line attached, sometimes I just use it for surface temperature but it can be a handy tool.
