Fishing related adventures you are looking forward to in 2023...

My list for 2023: Now through late spring: keep trying to catch a steelhead on a fly Clearwater, Ronde, or some other local river March: I'm planning a week long ski trip to Southern Idaho and Utah, and planning to work in some stops to fish April: hopefully a weekend in Montana for...

    In-country (national) bucket list destinations

If you plan a trip to Hayward, shoot me a PM. I lived in the area for a few years before moving out here a couple years ago and did some musky fishing on the rivers. I'm far from an expert, but have at least been on most of the rivers. This was my first musky on a fly, caught southeast of...

    Favorite fish of 2022

I'll offer 2 favorites for the year. The first is a brown that I caught in Montana this fall. My buddy and I were fishing a braided area where there were a bunch of huge fish surfacing in a slack area, presumably chasing emergers based on how they were surfacing. We couldn't figure out those...

    In-country (national) bucket list destinations

The Driftless is great fly-fishing for trout, mostly browns but also some native brookies in the healthiest streams. The average fish size will be smaller than Montana or Wyoming, but numbers can be really good and there is decent public access on a lot of streams. Northern MN, including the...

    In-country (national) bucket list destinations

I did the same thing a few years ago. Crossing a couple lakes and having the lake all to yourself is a great adventure. I need to go back sometime, the weather was terrible the first time and the fish weren't very active. Kabetogama is one one of my favorite places.

NFR 2022-23 ski season. Let's Go!!!!

I spent Christmas seekend over in Montana and skied 2 days at Lost Trail. Saturday was great conditions, both on trails and out in the trees. It warmed up a lot after Saturday so conditions weren't as good when I went back on Monday, but still a lot of fun. Between the so-so conditions and...

I have this same rod and really like it for dry flies, whoever buys it will like it! It's definitely a softer feel than most of my other rods. Ryan

The Mountain Whitefish, aka Short Fin Grayling thread

A friend and I were fishing a trib to the Yellowstone this fall, and I caught a couple whitefish while swinging streamers on a sink tip... obviously not targeting whitefish, but was a humorous way to catch them. We caught a few bigger ones on nymphs, but this one got its picture taken because...

    Dave Whitlock passed away

I met Mr Whitlock at a Fly Expo in St Paul, MN several years ago. He seemed to be just as nice and humble guy as everyone has been saying since his passing. He was selling prints of his art, and personalizing each on. I'm very glad that I bought this one from him that day!

    Washington Ice Fishing Guides?

That almost has to be the big annual ice fishing tournament in Brainerd, MN? The prizes they give out are impressive, especially because there are some big ones for seemingly random places in the standings, like a bunch of $$ or a 4-wheeler or something for the 500th largest fish, etc!

How do you manage your rods/line when backpacking?

+1 for this solution. I just added several layers of electrical tape on the bottom of my case to add some durability, but looks like Tom has a better option. I was normally able to fit 2 rods in 1 case, sometimes to have one set up for dry flies and one for streamers, or just to have an extra...

    Hoppers

Found some willing hopper eaters a few weeks ago... love fishing hoppers! Most of the fish were browns, but the biggest of the day was this rainbow.

Let’s start a trout spey thread

Singlehandjay - I'm curious, which TR do you have? I just picked up a 12 ft 4 wt TR a couple weekends ago. I think it's an older model (unused but on clearance at a shop in Oregon). Ironically, I also put a Guru on it, mostly because I had one with me on the trip and wanted to try out the...

    Particularly Memorable Takes

This is a pretty neat thread, I'm glad that I'm not the only one that remembers individual takes! Last spring I was fishing a river in Northern Minnesota for smallies and was finding enough that I switched over to a popper. I caught a couple on explosive takes, but this one just sipped it off...

    Northern Ontario Walleye

I got back from my Minnesota/Ontario trip last weekend. From a fishing standpoint it was just Ontario and Montana this year... everywhere that I would normally fish on the MN side of the border was horribly flooded. Fortunately, the lake that we go to in Ontario doesn't have any significant...

    Northern Ontario Walleye

Yes, pike flies on an 8wt, or my 7wt streamer rod. I have a 10 wt that I used for musky fishing but don't use that if the targets are pike / smallmouth. The bigger flies with the dragon tails are no fun at all to cast, but sure look great in the water. A lot of my pike fishing was on rivers...

    Northern Ontario Walleye

I haven't tied up nearly as many flies as I'd like for next week, but here are some that seem to work well - variation on a Murdich Minnows and Clousers for smallies and the bigger ones for pike. Hopefully the water has settled down some by your trip, or maybe that far north isn't flooding as...
