    Got any bird pics?

Slightly less crappy pic of the pileated that's been hanging around the last few days.

    NFR Got any Herp pictures?

On our morning walk here on Banjo Lane. Quiet and peaceful until I flinched at almost stepping on a banana slug, and startled my snake-phobic wife in process. No sooner finished explaining it was still too cool for snakes... when she almost stepped on this really pretty garter warming up on...

    Smoked Pork Chops

Dunno if this qualifies as legit "smoked" but I've been doing some grilling on the Weber using a mix of charcoal and hazelnut wood. Did a couple pork tenderloins that came out good. Hazelnut has a distinct flavor vaguely reminiscent of cherry, but not quite as aromatic, or intense like...

    Quick trip to the lake.

If it's the lake I think it is, it's one I always wanted to fish. Crappies and bluegill, fun and tasty.

Favorite recipes for basic store bought fish...

Petrale sole if you can find it. Fillets are thin and cook quickly. Super simple pan saute for a minute or each side. Easy-peasy and delicious after work dinner entree. Black cod also a fav but takes longer to pan sear then bake til just done. Also can't go wrong with cod cooked just about...

    Summer trout games

Having experienced a single bald-faced hornet sting, I can safely say OH HELL NO! That said, a video of someone else stupid enough to try that would be hilarious.

    Summer trout games

I think you should get a long stick and give it a poke. You know, for science sake. ;)

Thanks Boot, I'll be laughing about that all day. The spooky part is how much the old dude looks like my Dad did at that age. Same cranky expression too!

Albacore tuna charter, Tuesday, 1 September 2026

"Salty" is polite. It was Red Sky Charters, on the Bewitched. She was a big girl, slow, but roomy. Thankfully stable and capable of handling rough seas. I'll never forget being 35 miles offshore in 14' combined seas, looking up to see our trolled flies surfing over the wave crests. Like I...

Albacore tuna charter, Tuesday, 1 September 2026

Yes, Ed has "augmented" our catch with jigs. I will as well in a pinch, but love the fly grab too much to usually pick up a jig rod. Definitely a fun nd productive way to catch tuna. Landing tuna on fly gear can be done reasonably quick depending on rod weight and probably more so on...

    Got any bird pics?

Finally saw, and got a crappy 10x cell pic of, either a Western fly catcher, or a Western wood pewee. I get Merlin IDs for both but never see the cryptic little bastards. Leaning towards the "pewee" (who comes up with this stuff?)

    NFR Need vehicle opinions.

Agreed. No plans to sell or trade it in. It will probably become my daily commuter. The change is my wife was working/car-pooling with me, but is now staying home to care for her Mom who lives with us. So we need a reliable 2nd car, and one with better ground clearance.

    NFR Need vehicle opinions.

Following this as we need a newer car with similar specs @clarkman is looking for. Anyone have input on the Mazda CX models? We love our 2017 Mazda 6 (reliable, handles great, decent mileage) but its got lousy ground clearance and close to 120k miles.

I was wondering the same thing. Most fish that eat shrimp tend to be tasty.

    2026 Gardening Growing Thread

Posted this in the foraging thread but think it has gardening potential. We have a couple dozen or so native wild blackcap raspberry plants (rubus leucodermis) scattered around the cleared area of our property. One set of canes is growing next to our raised beds. A few weeks ago I noticed...

    Summer trout games

I'm pretty sure you will always remember this day, and never regret "dragging" him up there. In another 15 years - if I'm still around and sufficiently functional, you have permission to drag my octogenarian ass up there, or similarly gorgeous/inaccessible place.

Mushroom and other wild edible foraging

Might be more of a gardening post, but it did start with foraging wild blackcap raspberries growing in several patches around the property. One was right in the garden area. So as an experiment, I did a quick chicken wire wrap to keep the birds out. Berries are ripe now. What they lack in...
