Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica....Fishing Advice?

We're headed down for two weeks at the end of September. Curious if anyone has fishing advice they'd like to share for this area on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This is a family trip, not a fishing trip, but I'll be bringing my 9wt and a bunch of baitfish patterns for sure. Not much in the way of local guides for fishing, but I'll be looking a little closer when we get down there.

I'm hoping to do some beach fishing, but really have no idea what I'm getting into beyond that...

Thanks!

Only spent time in the NW corner, have a great trip. Costa Rica is awesome and you will be planning a return trip soon after!

On the Caribbean side I’ve fished the Rio Tortugera area in the 90’s…big tarpon, snook, and in the rivers an interesting assortment of freshwater fish…I was gear fishing then, mostly bucktail jigs and plugs…

I got to go to the Pacific side, around Tamarindo, back in '08. I was an 8th grader at the time. We did go on a charter but didn't catch much of anything. I was really hoping for some kind of billfish or roosterfish.

This time we're going to the Caribbean which does have a completely different culture and wildlife. Who knows what we'll find. All my research shows that clouser minnows and baitfish imitations are a great starting point. Will have to do a little more research on fishing seasons/licensing.
