Craig

I am off on our annual trip to Craig. Our first day we fished from Pruit to Cascade. The upper river was getting hammered by boats nymphing so we went for dries. It hit 80 on the water and a 15-20 kt wind didn’t help at all but it was downriver so could have been way worse.

Still, a lot of fun and Shane and Curt our guides worked their asses off it was impossible to get a good drift as the wind blew us off course on either bank or in the middle. Still with the best people and an adult libation after takes the edge off a tough day. Water is 60 and flows low at 2600 or so.

A tale of two days….my buds did well with 8-12 fish. I had only two , break offs, bent hook (18s), fish in the weeds or just poppped!. Still a great day but fate was against me, that’s fishing. The rainbows are super strong fish and lost a few I didn’t care about after great runs.

Weather is tough at 80 today, water still 60. We heard there’s a Seattle shop has a trip next week. Snow and daytime of 40 odd with rain. Crazy how things will change. Bring rain gear, warm hats and gloves…

It’s too hot, water needs to be under 50, it was 60 both days and so no chance of that. Saw 1 October caddis but too hot for them too and the hatches of them are not huge here. So short leash again today.

It was new dawn and a new day and pretty cold, the cars had frost on them. A new guide too. Ben. A younger dude than the guides we try to book but oh man. He works so hard and is so hungry to catch fish, he is always thinking out f the box. Today we did wolf creek again.

Today was the reverse of yesterday where I lost/missed so many fish. We got some real chunkers to around 18” and really thick on the shoulders. They would go berserk and it was a blast. A bud on the other boat got a ‘fairly’ honest 22”. At lunch wandered on the island and found a huge ant nest, the inner kid in me just had to pole it with a stick, they were PO’d

Now back at the ranch waiting for beef burritos for dinnner and reflecting on a good days fishing. More hot weather for us till Friday then dumping to 40 Sat and 34 on Sunday. The fish will appreciate the drop. Even fishing 40’ off the boat, they were so spooky on the flats given the # of bow waves we’d see.

Rinse and repeat tomorrow 😀

Thanks,

I loved Brutes ‘real time’ reports in AK and doing a poor effort to replicate them. The coyotes are calling in the hills and I’m tuckered after a long day great dinner and a lagavulin or two 😀

More to come. Our head guide wants to go after the canyon to fish dries as way less boats, but way less fish. Also short leash you strike instantly where with big hopper/skaters you give em time but I can’t….The revolution is pending. We all want wolf creek again,

Tomorrow morning will be interesting

go fish the canyon, way less people but still plenty of fish.

Guides said no to the canyon, didn’t really give a reason…below or above, today was tough, breakfast was great. Thr flow dropped to under 3k and so slots were tough and multiple boats bashing them. Sun was high and little wind, fishing sow bugs on a long cast to try not spok fish. Lost a quite a few and only landed two. My bud got a pig of a brown that fought like a rainbow.

I had my chance with a porker. It hit on the dead still flats after the island about a mile by Craig and took off straight down river about 60’ on a 6 sec run. Rod up, didn’t mess with the drag and backing about to show and ping. I was crushed my bud and guide were noting it was huge. I don’t know, felt they empathised but boy did it feel steam off and nothing I could do other than let it go.

Home to laughs and a cigars and rustled up a stroganoff for the crew.

Friday was our last day. Strong southerlies were expected and delivered by 11 am. Cloudy in the am but roasting in the pm. River flow had dropped to ~2.7k for another day 😔

Fishing was slow despite fewer boats. A catalogue of errors and bad luck/fweeds didn’t help, or canoeists and bank anglers being in the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ places depending on your perspective.

In the am about a mile above Craig, folks were letting loose with shotguns at a pheasant farm where reared birds are released in to a large field to be subsequently shot or in this case likely missed.

My KS buddy noted shooting any flying bird in high winds is really hard to do as they whizz downwind, he’s done a lot of it and said you really need to be an excellent shot; our guide noted the shooters that go there were always newbs and to the danger of them blind firing towards the river as there’s a 10-12’ drop from the bank of the field and so they can’t see the river that they are blasting towards….you know where this is going.

There were was few shots in succession and then we heard the plopping towards us in the water and immediately turned our backs and dropped our heads from that bank, shot landed all around us and on the boat. Our guide got hit on the knee and was very, very angry. He and my boat partner screamed at the bank from where the shots came from to GTF.

It worked and the shots stopped, no one came to look. We got to Craig and our guide found 2 pellets in the boat. It’s was reported to the game dept as a pellet in the eye and you’ll be blinded, also two sports near us were in WMs, both elderly and neither with PFDs that I could see 🙄 dunno if a pellet(s) could piece them but if it did there could be trouble as both were mid river in faster flows.

South of Craig was slow for us, and the wind was a pain, we hooked or really found ways to lose fish. Last drift my bud picked up two nice ones, I missed a good one and then got the mother of all wind tangles from my strike, then at the Dearborn take out. It was that kinda of day. The other buddies boat had over 20…

Off home at 730 this am, wet. A great trip, very challenging at times but really climate change has messed up the Missouri experience re low water in the river, it’s warmer and of course if the freestones are on hoot owls then more pressure on the Mo.

There are still lots of fish there, just high temp/bright sun/low flows /high angler pressure. We saw the wake of one fish on the flats that was like Jaws, a 3-4” high bow wake and the two boils from its tails that were beyond a dustbin lid size. All in <10” of water, it is amazing to see one fish simply well beyond the many of good sized fish we scared and clearly saw on the flats, there are monsters 😀

A great trip nonetheless, despite varied results. The main part is I’m so lucky to have friends who tolerate hard fishing conditions, me, the others, and are very good fishers and a lot of fun. Also they make great food, drinks, can bs, have many funny fishing camp/life chat/tales and can tell/take jokes. Ego’s were never an issue 😀

My thanks too for Lance who drove his truck both ways. 1200 miles all round.

I forgot to note our great thanks to our guides for the trip; Ben, Shane, and Curt from Headhunters who were all so professional and hard working under ever lower flows, high water/air temps/sun glare and crowded water.

Great report and photos, Dave. It was a fun trip and we lucky to avoid the 13" of snow predicted over the weekend.
