They we're running with the June kings back in the day. Was downstream from the Wallace falls hatchery if I remember correctly.
That thing had to be 20 lbs...just a massive Chum
Kay Rome!
Summer chum on the sky? What am I missing?
Interesting. They are there, just not many. Amazingly I've never caught one, seen spawned out carcass in September.
That's the ticket!!Likely just a big buck humpy with purple and green stripes.

I think it was fall. We were targeting cohoSummer chum on the sky? What am I missing?

Yeah, little chrome bullets. Very sporty & they do take jigs just like the zombie bucks they be cohabitating withOther than the Nisqually winter chum which unfortunately are having a tough time now, there always seems to be some early, smaller bright fall chum hens that show up early in the run. This one came out of a local stream and I’ve caught them out of the Chehalis system as well. Fear the nightmare jig.

Chum salmon run timing is earlier with increasing latitude. It's a water temperature thing. When I lived in Kitimat we used to get chums starting in late june. Some where large (20+ lbs) and very bright. They were lots of fun to catch, not at all like the fall chums.
I think the June trip was where I almost got socked by the deck hand by hitting him twice in the back of the head with a glob of eggs. I don’t know, trips run together these days.Ya think? Maybe I'm losing it but was sure it was a June trip for Kings..
x2...first salmon I ever caught on the OR coast was a Chum....was like hooking into a 20# bulldog.I thought the thread was gonna be about how damn strong chum can be when you hook ‘em. Which is really strong. Chum salmon are cool. Pinks are fun, but chum are much cooler.
They're also multi-modal in Southeast AK. We get a summer component that enters freshwater in late June / early July, and a fall component that shows up in September / October. Many streams host both.Chum salmon run timing is earlier with increasing latitude. It's a water temperature thing.
