Chum Strength

They we're running with the June kings back in the day. Was downstream from the Wallace falls hatchery if I remember correctly.

That thing had to be 20 lbs...just a massive Chum

Likely just a big buck humpy with purple and green stripes.

They can be bright...

Just don't see them very often around here.

They are there, just not many. Amazingly I've never caught one, seen spawned out carcass in September.
Interesting.
Out here on the Canal, the Summer Chum show up in September, and of course go right to spawning...never seen any in river before last of August...and only a couple. Labor Day is when numbers show.

That's the ticket!!

You'd never guess in 100 chances what that Jumbo Chumster bit.

But Stoner I'll give you one hint BFD was involved

Other than the Nisqually winter chum which unfortunately are having a tough time now, there always seems to be some early, smaller bright fall chum hens that show up early in the run. This one came out of a local stream and I’ve caught them out of the Chehalis system as well. Fear the nightmare jig. 😉

Yeah, little chrome bullets. Very sporty & they do take jigs just like the zombie bucks they be cohabitating with

When I lived in Kitimat we used to get chums starting in late june. Some where large (20+ lbs) and very bright. They were lots of fun to catch, not at all like the fall chums.

Yeah, we got some overachievers in late June or early July on the Kanektok, and again in August on a different trip.

Ya think? Maybe I'm losing it but was sure it was a June trip for Kings..
I think the June trip was where I almost got socked by the deck hand by hitting him twice in the back of the head with a glob of eggs. I don’t know, trips run together these days.

I thought the thread was gonna be about how damn strong chum can be when you hook ‘em. Which is really strong. Chum salmon are cool. Pinks are fun, but chum are much cooler.
x2...first salmon I ever caught on the OR coast was a Chum....was like hooking into a 20# bulldog.
