I’ve been using the Garmin InReach Mini 2 for a while on longer trips, and it’s been really reliable for messaging and emergency use. The satellite connection is generally solid even in remote areas, which gives a lot of peace of mind when you’re far from coverage.
Battery life has also been pretty good for multi-day trips if you keep tracking intervals reasonable. It’s not a full GPS like some larger units, but paired with a phone for maps, it works perfectly for most backcountry situations.
