Stream/River fishing for novice near Alger?

I'll be taking a vacation around the Alger area where my son, a novice fly fisher, will be joining. We'd like to do some stream/river fishing for trout where he might catch something. Size isn't a real concern. I've been doing some blueline research and lots of streams up there look tiny and inaccessible, and the Nooksack is totally closed to fishing (based on emergency regs, if I'm reading correctly). Any suggestions on a place to wet a line, preferably a dry fly, for a half a day that's not too far of a drive from Alger? I've considered the Skagit/Sauk, but it's a longer drive...

Thanks!

You've done a good job describing location. However, you didn't mention timing. Timing can be as significant as location when it comes to fishing. After location and timing, drive time is also very significant. Often, longer drives are the ONLY option if you intend to fish. There are many options in the Skagit basin. But they are a longer drive.

Doh! You're so right @Salmo_g! It'll be around July 25/26 this year. If we have to drive an hour an a half, that's fine, but anything longer might be pushing it.
