Farewell to Maltby Antiques - The hunting grounds are closing

I saw a notification from Bob that Maltby Antiques is starting a "going out of business" sale and expects to close within a few months. No!!! His store was the last of the bunch in this area, at least to my knowledge. I'm very sad.

When I fell into the abyss of classic bamboo fly rods and old fly reels I scratched the itch for gear by searching local CL ads, eBay and most happily, those very few "Man-tiques" stores in the area that were in the business of buying that old, classic gear (and lots not-so-classic) that bubbled up out of the region's households. Star Mall's basement store in Snohomish, Plug Ugly in LaConner and Maltby Antiques. It was a treat to prowl all three, looking for the occasional treasures hiding in their inventory, and sometimes picking up a fun piece for my collection. Relatively cheap prices on very good rods by FE Thomas, Granger, Phillipson, and Edwards, among many others. I even purchased on 7-1/2' Goodwin Granger Favorite that was in the 1930's era 7630 taper, a rod made only during one year and a rod that caused quite a stir across the Granger collectors over the country. And reels? Of yes, including Hardy's and lots others. Even old 1930's Field & Stream magazines and early Leonard catalogs. A joy!

I'll miss dropping into Maltby, seeing Bob behind the counter and greeting him with "Hi Bob! Got anything especially good lately?" When Bob saw me he knew that "good" meant collectible bamboo fly rods and high end reels. Every now and then he'd shrug his shoulders and reply "Nothing much...but here's something you might be interested in..." At which point I checked to see if my wallet was in my pocket, because most of the time Bob said that the gear was going to be something really cool.

Farewell Bob, and I miss Star and PlugUgly.

Guess I'll just take what I have and head out to go fishin'.

Theres a store or gas station in Klickitat that has some great stuff.. can't recall the name though..

I better run out there to buy up some old Ben Paris Hunting and Fishing guides. He's got quite a collection.

That basement spot at Star Mall in Snohomish was a real sleeper for me when I was into military stuff. Didn't fish at the time but would always find something interesting in there.

Yes, that place was a cool underground man-cave. He was the one who sold to me the rare GG7630 that made Scott Whitman nearly speechless when he saw it. I once spotted a good condition Hardy Perfect, circa 1920-1935, on a shelf there. I asked the owner how much he wanted and he said "$150, I hate those old Hardy's, they aren't worth S!!*T." Apparently, he was a Pflueger fan. I went home with this...

I would find great stuff at the pawn shops in your area in the late 80’s early 90’s. DJ’s in bothell and a couple in lake city, forgot the names, as well as a couple shops on 99 up near Ted’s Wish I Had more money at the time because I had to pass on so many deals on rods and shotguns.

I miss DJ’s. They had a great selection of firearms and I always enjoyed talking to Bruce.

Dave, glad you found it first, I already have three 8' rods I love and it would have been four if I'd walked in there and found that. My wife thanks you sincerely!

As far as I know it was the last of its breed. But old classic gear will continue to bubble up from closets, attics, basements and where the owners or estate sale buyers will go to sell them is a good question.

Looks like an opportunity to open up some small specialty shop dealing in your favorite things Ron.
Ha! Mike, there was a time, long ago, when I thought owning a fly shop would be fun. Now maybe I'm getting lazy in my older age, but being tied down to a "hobby" business now sounds more like a chore than a dream.
