Skwala pictures, and a couple obscure relatives

Figured these might be timely, as I was staring at them on my tying bench the other day trying to get the colors right before heading to the Yakima. I'm kind of out of practice on tying, but I improvised some messy, eye-crowded, lopsided abominations that fooled a few fish and at least closer on size and color than most of the commercial ties.

Now some fun ones, close relatives of Skwala you don't hear too much about, but they turned up in my kick net samples in the Wenatchee mountains. Frisonia picticeps is the closest, and to tell it apart from Skwala you have to look at the teeth under a microscope.

And Megarcys (exact species can't be determined from the nymph):

I love this! Great pics!

I've been tying up darker stone nymphs to approximate skwalas. I think the 20 incher is a good one. Smaller Pat's rubberlegs. I've been tying a version of the Mercers skwalas. I'll try to post a pic, or two later.

Hi Jason-

See that you just joined this website pnwflyfishing.com earlier this month. Hopefully your presence here will spur more entomology related postings on this forum, which have been rather sparse since the unfortunate passing of our good friend, Mark Melton. In any event, congratulations on your rebuilt Troutnut website, which is simply awesome.

Oh that's the same troutnut! I love that site! I should've put that together

Oh yikes Roger, sorry to hear about Mark! I tried emailing him early this year, hadn't heard back, and wondered what was going on. He was a great guy and will very much be missed.

Extra good stuff here, thanks. We gots skwalas around The C.O. too. The D and Crooked.

For adults I use a size 12 chubby. Black foam, grey wing and olive dubbed belly.

Rarely see the bugs nor fish rising to them, but they'll eat up top.

Edit: found a pic
