Ug-Lee died today…..

So today after around 80+ fish plus some big rainbows….the ugliest twisted stik crapped out. Fish #8 was a toad, 18” and feisty! The next fish snapped the tip off around 14” from the tip top…..just splintered it. Kind of surprised where it broke, but, I’ll repurpose the guides and black bamboo reelseat for some other Hotrod. At least it didn’t die in vain snagged on a log! Rest in pieces…..

I took a walk around my neighborhood and found a tip section from the brush pile they still haven’t cleaned up….glad they’re lazy. I’m scarfing it on now….might be stronger than originally.

Franken-Ug C&R’d 12 nice rainbows today all sight casting midge emergers to sipping trout! Another awesome calm sunny day on the water! The scarf seems pretty good…..great caster!

16 rainbows today all sight casting midge emergers! The ug-stik is holding up well…..casts great, a real fishing stik! Sunshine and no wind…..not like yesterday’s rain/wind fishing on a different lake.

You live to far away from me….I’d let you cast or better yet….fish it! I don’t and never will own a cell phone…..so pictures and videos ain’t happening…..besides, I built it for my pleasure! The best thing about ugly stiks are the looks I get at boat launches!!

When I first started fishing down in Alabama, I could only afford ug-lee rods. They worked then and obviously work now.

They are what caveman used when they started to fish.

No need to prove what history has already demonstrated is true...

With my “regular” bamboo rods I give one haul on the last forward cast. 40’-50’ is as far as I need to cast, even less with a bobber. Do you build rods? You need some garden bamboo and build yourself one! Not hard to do….just a pain in the ass to wrap such a crooked stik!

I was just curious how far you could actually cast with Ug.

I dallied with rebuilding some older cane at one time.
Having my kids make some bamboo rods will be a great project.

I used a Hardy cane to nymph fish ( long before the euro became popular), without an indicator on the river, just about every day of the season. Nothing came close to the sensitivity of that cane for browns, rainbows, and brookies.
