Had a friday/saturday backpacking trip cancelled by rain and thunderstorms but the weather cleared today so my son and I hiked to a small cutthroat lake near Stevens Pass. 1.1 miles and about 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

I fished a brisk 7' Tom Fulk 5 weight bamboo rod with a floating line. Tom's 62nd rod made in 2006. The cutts in this lake are always looking up. A cast to the reeds or up against the trees on the shoreline usually found a fish, sometimes two at a time.

The cutts in this lake have orange red bellies...

Was stunned to catch a healthy brook trout. No mention of brooks on the WDFW website for this lake and no mention of brook trout in my old Ben Paris Fishing guides.

My best flies were a size 14 Invicta and a size 14 grouse and claret. They were beaten up pretty bad by the end of the day but still catching fish. Seals fur dubbing fluffs up and looks really attractive when it's been fished. Gold oval tinsel counter-ribbing protects the hackle.

A stop at Zeke's for Deluxe Burgers and Chocolate Milkshakes on the way home. Saw noone at the lake today and noone had used the trail for four days if the trail register is to be believed.

There's no record of brookies ever being stocked in that lake. They started to show up about 10 years ago in limited numbers. How did they get there??? Probably a bucket biologist.

I've never caught a brook trout at this lake till this year so it was quite a surprise. Someone who visited the lake a couple weeks ago drew a fish picture next to their name in the trail registry. Was that you AlpineFisher?

Not me. I haven't been there in many, many years.

I've fished a lot of those higher lakes in years past, never saw a Brookie. The mention of Zeke's brought back a mess of good memories.
Thanks for sharing!
