I know I've posted here before about my only FF experience being in summertime/fall... and I'm trying to change that.
I went out yesterday and hit the aforementioned river... I came up with a big fat zero, but I'd like to ask a few questions.
I was higher up in the system - places that I would normally go during the summertime. Now, I was trying to think more slow/deep/sheltered and trying to hit those places but it didn't seem like there was that many places that looked like that - at least in the places I went. Maybe I was too high in the system?
Bug-wise, there were Nemouras and what I'm assuming were WMBs as they were big, brown, and mayfly looking. I tried some dries but nothing seemed to be looking up. As far as nymphs, I tried a San Juan and a couples nymphs for subsurface stuff with no luck.
I know some of the issue is definitely me - in all the years I've fly fished I've only tossed on nymphs a few times... couple that with not being familiar with winter/spring conditions and habits, and my failure surely isn't a complete surprise. I'd just like to know if I was too high in the system, or if they're just super scarce this time of year.
Maybe I need to put myself into a target rich environment, but we're pretty limited on moving water options this side of the state before late May/early June.
