When I make moved to the NW in the early 70’s I met some folks who were into backpacking and hiking. I got invited to go on a “hike”. Well, a climb was involved and they said they had all the necessary gear. The climb ended up at a rock face and we ended up “hanging” off the face for the night...
The Canyon Creek that flows into the S. fork of the Stilly? I used to fish it in the 70’s & 80’s.
Not a lot of access or places that held fish. The best spot was in the canyon that required one to lower yourself down to a ledge using a rope. Great hole that usually held fish. Getting out also...
Chum in saltwater fight entirely different than in freshwater. I’ve caught them Puget Sound to Alaska. When they’re a distance away from their home river their appearance and fighting ability are entirely different. The Everett Herald used to have an annual awards ceremony for largest fish by...
Early 80's - late October. Caught a big one trolling for coho. Flasher and hoochie at 35'. I still remember it jumping several times pulling a 12" flasher and a 32" leader in the air. Great memory!
I started out with paddle yaks and even tried the Revo 16. It was fast but I got tired of sitting in water. If you weighed more than 150 lbs you always had a wet butt, regardless of water conditions. I've moved on to Hobie Pro Anglers. They're heavy beasts but are safe, fast, and efficient. The...
First broken rod was a 7-1/2’ bamboo of unknown origin. Fishing an overgrown creek and broke the tip section against a branch on a hook set. Didn’t learn my lesson as I broke it twice more doing the same thing. It was probably about 6’ when I graduated to a white Shakespeare rod. The one that...
I had lunch at Arnie’s in Edmonds today. There was a HUGE crowd crabbing from the fishing pier. Before lunch I walked out on the pier to see what was happening. Not a lot of success for the crowd. There were 3 WDFW officers there checking for licenses. They definitely were busy writing citations.
1999 Hakai Pass BC. Fishing alone, just before dark, in a 13’ Whaler style boat. Alone because my boat partner elected to stay on the mothership and start celebrating a very good day of salmon fishing. I was slowly motor mooching along a kelp line and I got a bit too close and hung up on a kelp...
