Convention calls for the scientific name to appear in italics, for the genus to start with a capital letter, and for the species to start with a lower-case letter, as in Hexagenia limbata. ;)

I believe this male subimago of family Heptageniidae, and to (probably) be Cinygma dimicki. If I am correct, then its common name would be Western Light Cahill.

Hi Tom- Rather than being of genus Rhitrogena, I believe this male subimago to be of genus Ameletus, perhaps (but not necessarily) Ameletus vernalis. From which county, and what date did it emerge?

Different states have different taxes, but all of them can all be counted on to tax us. ;)

Hi Steve, The most obvious difference (in their winged lifestages) is the number of tails. A BWO would have only 2 tails, whereas a Trico would have 3 tails.

Hi Steve- The mayfly female subimago pictured above is not generally referred to as a BWO, but rather, as a Trico. I believe it to have the scientific name of Tricorythodes explicatus. Incidentally, that is one fantastic photo.
