    NFR Humor (No political jokes)

So, why is this ad in Spanish and not Portuguese?

    NFR Humor (No political jokes)

I learned to be a carpenter back in the 70s by borrowing tools and walking onto job sites asking for a job. I got run off a couple jobs on my first day. I would barely make enough to go to the bar that evening. I finally got on a crew where I was sent to work on a remodel with an old carpenter...

    Patagonia

I’m sure you can still find some of my posts archived at the old Washington Fly Fishing forum. All of my experience has been in Argentina and all DIY; I have never stayed at a lodge or fished with a guide (although I have made some Argentine friends who have taken me out a few times). This...

    Wyoming Advice

Probably not the best time, cuz flows will be really high. Most of my experience is western WY, so flows might drop earlier further east or in SW. Guided float on the S Fk Snake could be good, or a dam controlled stretch of water like the miracle mile on the N Platte.

Hackle guage...any free ones to print?

I have used a printable hackle gauge for years, but I have no idea where I got it. I’m sure you can find one on the web. I tape it to a 3X5 card and keep it by my vice and keep a digital copy so that I can reprint it whenever I need to. Hook sizes are not so variable that you can’t be close...

Running into fishing enforcement on my first day flyfishing...

On the other thread, Josh’s comment that most of the folks he has encountered that are not following the rules are gear fishers reminded me of one of my few encounters with DFW enforcement. I was fishing the North Fork Stilly late in the season after the fly only season had ended. Most fly...

    NFR Humor (No political jokes)

This derives from a poem by Ogden Nash: The one L lama he’s a priest The two L llama he’s a beast I bet a silk pajama there ain’t no three L lllama PS, it has been brought to my attention by a fireman from Maine that there’s a conflagration known as a three L lllama!

    Sad news out of Colorado.

I'm very saddened by this. I lived in Boulder when I first got into fly fishing and started reading his writings. It was cool to drive by his place in Lyons, even though I never met him. I cut my teeth fishing the St. Vrain. I was looking forward to having many more books of his to read...

Trout from above and Half Dome

Great TR, Boot! I climbed Half Dome via the cables many times back in the 70s/80s, often early in the season when the cables were just lying in the rock as gwb described. I climbed it with an older friend and mentor who promised himself when he retired that he would climb it every year until...

    How important is thread color?

Usually not at all, but we tie flies, at least in part, for aesthetic reasons, right?

    Montana Alternatives?

I just checked the MT DFWP for hoot owl closures and see about a dozen rivers closed mostly in the hotter parts of the state or in the main stems below major trips. I don't see any of the places that most attract me to MT under hoot owl restrictions. I suggest taking advantage of the...

NFR Euro Cup and Copa America Finals

Both were outstanding matches. I'm pleased that they were both available without a paywall. I had to root for the underdog in England, but Spain were clearly the superior team. I had mixed allegiances in the Copa final; after USA were eliminated, Argentina and Colombia were my favorite teams...

    2024 Bison Score

Holy $#!T! Back in my Yellowstone hot-potting days (approaching 50 years ago, sad to say...) we would carry thermometers and determined 103º F to be optimal and 105º to be the upper limit. These guys drove into a 105º pool and made it out okay, but a little - what's the culinary term - blanched?

    The last road trip

If you are looking to camp, the USFS Warm River CG is very civilized for a Forest Service CG. Mowed lawns and plumbed toilets and right on the Warm river, which can provide some pleasant fishing that may include some big browns migrating up it to spawn in the fall. It's a 20-30 minute drive at...
