Very Memorable Experiences in your Life

May 30, 1986. I think it was memorial day weekend. In googling for the date (I have the original LA Times article somewhere) I see that there was actually 21 fatalities. The bus company (starlite) is still in business, and I occasionally see one of their buses on the road, which brings back...

Very Memorable Experiences in your Life

My girlfriend and I had driven up north from LA to camp next to and fish the East Walker river. It was a very wet spring, and the river was unfishable, so we decided to head north and take a look at the Truckee. As we rounded the first corner going into the West Walker canyon, we came across a...

NFR Talk to me about portaledges (climbing sleeping systems) - your likes/dislikes

As someone who has spent many nights sleeping in a hanging hammock above Yosemite valley, sleeping on a portaledge would be like staying in a 4 star hotel, but they hadn't been invented yet. Probably the worse thing about the hammock was how long it took each morning to straighten out the...

    Russ Peak

I don't think Russ made spinning rods in anything but glass, and his 4 piece rods were graphite.

    Russ Peak

Before I met and bought Peak's rods i used Fenwick's. Their factory / shop was somewhere in Orange County (Huntington Beach?) and I had multiple spinning / flyfishing / backpacking rods of theirs. They had a good reputation at the time, great warranty work. I will try and post some pics of...

    Russ Peak

I used to live about a mile and a half from his shop on Allen Avenue in Pasadena. It was open to the public on Fridays, 1 to 5, and Saturdays 8 to 12. He usually had a 2 to 3 year wait for his rods. He was a very friendly soul and would happily explain the design of his blanks and the effect of...

Tips/advice/recommendations for Green River, Utah August or September

Red Canyon Lodge is nice, and the restaurant is really good, considering the area. What hasn't been mentioned is that Red Canyon Lodge has a private C&R lake for the renters. We would fish the river in the morn, head back to the cabin for a rest, then fish the lake in the evening.

    NFR Owens Valley

Yes, went to Little Lakes Basin, but my preferred route was to hang a right at the pack station, go over he ridge and drop down into the Hilton Creek drainage, where the multiple Hilton Lake(s) and Davis lake are. Much less people, plus the creek below the lakes went through a beautiful meadow...

    Bad cold or something viral

I was stunned when my doc told me that OJ was one of the worst things that you can drink when sick due to the high amount of mucous that it produces.

SFR New used truck - potentially

Weighing in here....2016 F-150 Supercab short bed with the 3.5 eco boost. Love it. A friend has a Dodge diesel, when he hooked up his trailer to my truck (Dodge was in the shop) he couldn't believe the eco boost had more torque than his oil burner. Was weary enough of turbos so I bought the...

    NFR Owens Valley

I grew up in LA, and my grandmother ran a fishing lodge on Hilton Creek, which flows into lake Crowley. I've made the drive through Owens Valley many hundreds of times. I had the good fortune to spend my summers with her beginning with my childhood. In my early teens, my chores were to split...
