Steelhead & Trout

Hook - Standard wet/nymph hook, size 8-10

Thread - Black

Ribbing - Heavy black thread

Body - Dubbed with light olive rabbit fur or yarn

Hackle - Natural black hen hackle tied on as a collar, two turns only, and tied back

Head - Black ostrich herl

Joe Shirshac of Sacramento, California, developed both of the above patterns.

In addition to the steelhead population they were intended for, they are effective for resident trout in the American River system and other streams as well.

Another one. Better proportioned I think, feathers barely extend past the hook bend, angles steeper and sparser overall.

Nice fly! I like soft hackle streamers. Here's a video for a neat variation:

I do similar...I add Lagartun Flat Braid tag (hot spot), then dubbing or twisted ostrich herl (for a bump)...then marabou and collar materials.

Caught a nice sea-run cutthroat on the N Umpqua with a orange/hot pink/purple combo.

Since they’re not aquatic insects, they don’t normally float for long when they hit the water so a sunken pattern might be useful.
