The ability of one’s fly to give the stink eye to an angry fish to illicit a bite is an underrated aspect of fly design IMO

I just tried something that I think will work pretty well for a weed guard. I put a couple drops of locktite gel superglue at the base of the deerhair throat where it meets the clipped head and bent those hairs forward slightly while the glue dried. It stiffened up those fibers, I hope just just enough to make the hook point ride over weeds.
Another good weed guard, though perhaps more bulky, is to tie in three shorter sections of 20-25lb mono as "tails". One on top, the others on each side (left and right) of the shank. Tie the fly over them, then bend them down so they make loops just larger than the hook bend and point, and tie them off at the head. Crushes down when a fish bites, but keeps most weeds off.
