No steelhead in Montana that I know of, but this pattern was one of my best cutthroat flies last year. Obviously the ones I catch are not that picky but that’s probably because I fish water that doesn’t get a lot of traffic, which is kinda what I prefer. I’m an old fart, too, and being able to see my fly is pretty important to me; this should check that box off (haven’t tried this particular one yet but can’t wait to use it once runoff is over).Sorry, but I would find casting that to a steelhead to be embarrassing when a well tied muddler would get the job done. Granted I am a dinosaur but to me steelhead flies shouldn't look like they need to be plugged in at night.
I love tying and fishing muddlers (I’ve posted about 300 on this site over the past 3 years) but I really love foam flies, too; life’s too short not to have fun doing what you like to do.
Regards,
Scott
