What's in your vise?

I don’t know what it is about shrimp patterns specifically, but every single one I tie is a catastrophe.

I hear you. I’m never satisfied with how mine turn out. Something always never looks quite right with mine. I need to do sit down and do a deep dive into some videos of the folk who fish sea trout in Europe and how they tie their patterns which I really like. Here are a couple example.

Here's a link I emailed myself least night:

I plan to tie up several of these for the March Madness swap.

Outstanding! What's the fuzzy underwing material, Bongoman?
A combination of Golden Stone Congo Hair with a touch of Salmon Orange Congo Hair mixed and brushed in as Lee Clark showed me at a fly show in Albany, OR a few years ago

Nordic anglers ties some really nice shrimp patterns for sea trout that are very effective in PS for SRC. My favorite base pattern they tie is simple and an easy foundation to experiment off of. I’ve tied it just like in the video below but have since subbed marabou for craft fur and done away with the dubbing loops most days. Replaced with simple dubbed bodies and palmered marabou heads. I tie them with schlappen a lot as well. Really unlimited possibilities materials and color wise and they’ll all work. I don’t love fly tying so I am always looking for simpler ways to tie flies or just something different to do while at the vise. Nothing is more boring to me than mass tying flies of the same pattern. SRC are a great fish to target if you’re like that because they are so aggressive and basic shrimp patterns like this are fun because you can create lots of different looks off the same foundation that will all work. The key IMO is to get that nice tear drop profile.

Edit: they also tie some cool marine worm patterns too.

Thanks very much. I've never used Congo Hair. I'm guessing it holds its bulk, so it works with the deer hair for floatation. True?
