WA HB1707 Proposed New Life Jacket Bill

There are already so many laws i ignore.

This will be added to the list.
On state highways, county roads and interstates I have been known to exceed the speed limit which is not legal, I do not speed in residential neighborhoods. I don't go out on any kind of floating device without a pfd; law or no law.

Last year there was an unsuccessful attempt by the legislature to pass a life jacket bill
Spokane County has an ordinance that makes wearing lifejackets mandatory on any moving water but unfortunately it's poorly enforced.

Huh, I thought PFDs, whistles and lights were already required for PWCs. I always wear one.
Last year I testified against a proposed bill (that failed) to require a boaters ed card for PWC; small rafts, kayaks, canoes, float tubes...

Two kids drowned in Howard Lake today. Lots of Law Enforcement there for the “recovery effort.” Just saying.

Update: young men aged 19 and 21.

Some puzzling carveouts. The pdf law won't apply to you if you...
  • are operating a squirt boat
  • are participating in a yoga paddleboard class within 100 feet of shore
  • are a member of a recognized native american tribe
  • are occupying a canoe, kayak or paddleboard under trainer supervision
Evidently native americans, people in squirt boats and people in yoga paddleboard classes can't drown.

I will vouch for Buzzy that he might exceed the speed limit just a little. 🤫
I can hardly keep up with him in my truck.😆

I believe some paddle board operators go without the PFD and they are not tethered to the board. Bad combo. I also feel most would wear a PFD for certain if they ever had a previous accident

That is the bill that I was referring to. Obviously, I need to do a better job of reading/remembering before making some of my comments. Thanks for mentioning this and correcting me.
