Urban fishing in Tokyo

My rodmaker friend informed me there is a long waiting list for these rods and they cost as much as ours.
Oh well.

Such an intriguing fishery, in the middle of a city of 14 million people!
My wife's family are from the rural side of a small city south of Tokyo. The area used to have countless small farms including rice paddies. There are lots of canals, much, much smaller than the tidal canals seen in the video, but the canals were host to lots of koi and common carp. I used to jog along one canal and often would stop to rest along one control structure (dam). I enjoyed harvesting grass seed and feeding the koi (oh, I wanted to fish that canal).

Was reminded of the Chief Joseph quote-

“When the last deer disappears into the morning mist, When the last elk vanishes from the hills, When the last buffalo falls on the plains, I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.”

Way to go Japanese brothers of the angle !

I think we need to direct Mark Kadoshima to this thread. Those rods look a lot like the one he found in his late fathers gear.

How wonderful to be able to fish in the middle of the city! I can absolutely see the romance to it (although the idea of eating bottom feeders makes me wonder how clean the water is).

Do you eat lingcod or catfish ?

From my short , 3 month stay in japan and okinawa, i remember them constantly issuing health warning notices similar to what we do here regarding crab and fish from the Sound. So, I think most folks will be fine.

I used to fish all over Tokyo when I lived there. Park ponds, Ueno Park lake from the rental rowboats ( not supposed to fish but I pled ignorance when I got caught LMAO) , canals, the more out-of-sight areas of the imperial moat….good times. Lots of ocean fishing and river fishing too.
Harrassing the sacred Koi were you 😜

Seattle has Greenlake, Haller Lake, and Bitter Lake within the city limits. All are stocked.

Ditto Federal Way, with Jeanne, Steel, Doloff, Angle, Five Mile, and several others.

Yeah, I’ve given a number of those S King Co. Lakes a whack: Doloff, Angle, Fenwick, and North. The one time I brought an inflatable to Angle, I did score a reel burner of a rainbow.

Not to jack the thread but, some of them are hard to find entry to. Such as Trout Lake, just east of Five Mile.
