Rod Building The Rod Building Thread

I just use a very small metal spatula for all my epoxy. For long wraps load it up thick, smear it back n forth and use heat to drip the excess back into your epoxy, then I hit the edges.
I may give that a try if I can’t find a wide thin brush. I’ve seen a fair bit of people use them too.

I use a stint glued inside the butt. The butt is trimmed equal to the seat length. The stint is put inside the butt, and the seat slides over the stint. Here is a link...it's the 2nd video on reel seats..

The stint worked out very well...solid and secure...Thanks again for the suggestion.
I used a combination of birch bark and burled cork for the grip and a reel seat with wood burl insert and silver hardware.
Now just need to wrap the guides. (Will post the final result when done...)

Beautiful Herkileez!!!! Have you ever thought of personalizing or at minimum offering cork handles on your wading sticks/poles?
Thanks Porter....I've stayed away from cork handles on my staffs, as, IMO, cork would crumble under the pressures put on it while bearing down on the staff. (I've never heard of the gel grips failing...so, for me, simple is better)

I think I made these trim bands harder than necessary. Much easier on the other side of the ferrule wrap IMG_0934.jpeg🤣

Did you put them on 1st or after the wrap? You can put them on first, slide them into position. Start your wrap and snuggle it up to the band. Trimming them is a challenge. Many times I've had to do it all over because I nicked the wraps..
After. Problem is I leave the tags on until I’m ready for epoxy.

If you're having problems with the tags or the wraps not staying in place, start a very light, thin coat of epoxy to start. Trim the tags with a very sharp razor blade or scissors after it dries. Then do a final layer of epoxy or two.. When I was working on rods commercially we did one coat and done, but I like to do multiple thin coats. Two or three total. Just my two cents!

A much easier way to do trim wraps is to start with your main colour, add the trim part way in, then finish again with the main.
Here's a pic where I started with black (from the ferrule end), added trims as I went, then finished with black. That way, everything is locked in and nothing comes loose.
(Also leaves room for an alignment dot)

Do you actually thin the epoxy, or do you just start with a very sparse coat?

Just a very sparse coat.. I use a fine paint brush.. just do a thin coat to start and keep everything in place...
