Bass fly on an OP river. Somebody is getting funky! Will put it to proper use in the gorge this spring.

Not so sure of their fly choice, but they were in the right water.

So I took said bass fly to a C side lake near me this evening to see if I could find my first smallie of the season. It’s right in town and is a popular family beach for kids. Wasn’t getting any action on top water so switched up to a small clouser and caught a….kite?!?

I’m gonna have to fly this bad boy on my JD float in a couple weeks then bring it back to its native habitat for another kid to play with.

Dad tip: Kite flying is best done on an 8 foot spin rod, the gearing of the retrieve is just about perfect and on a strong variable wind day the control you get is phenomenal. Make sure you use a good high quality swivel. Fly rod gearing at 1:1 is not nearly as fun on the retrieve. Kids have way more fun on flying kites with the spin rod...they can launch them themselves and it is a good intro to drag, bail arm etc...Plus it is a fun way to turn a slow fishing day where the wind crept up into an awesome kite day.... I don't recommend doing it from the Kayak, as it starts to pull the kayak a small kite will drop and end up in the drink. Your kid will think this is hilarious though. Maybe that's what happened to Bluey and pal....
Great tip. We are more partial to a 7ft bass casting rod with a line counter reel (backup light lingcod jig rod), kid can launch and "fight the kite", play with the reel drag plus enjoy how high it gets!Dad tip: Kite flying is best done on an 8 foot spin rod, the gearing of the retrieve is just about perfect and on a strong variable wind day the control you get is phenomenal. Sage still has that lifetime warranty?Well that's good to know. I've used my 7wt. fly rod and all that casting and double-hauling just ripped the kite apart. Crying kids...

The other thing you can use a 7 wt for is getting a wiffle ball out of a tree. It's a little like using a Ferrari to carry a queen sized mattress home from mattress warehouse, hands holding it down on account of the twine not being far enough apart and the wind lifting the whole pad...
It's not great for placing or removing christmas lights though, neither the ferrarri, kite or 7 wt. I could see how the mattress there could be useful though, as like a bouldering-style pad in case you stretch it on the reach while 30 foot up on a ladder.
nice. we are planning a much earlier jd trip this year. around month end. when are u guys doing the drift ?So I took said bass fly to a C side lake near me this evening to see if I could find my first smallie of the season. We always float in April. No permits to deal with, less folks(almost empty) and a easy float at the higher flows. We will be up there third week this year.nice. we are planning a much earlier jd trip this year. around month end. when are u guys doing the drift ?
That's taking cut throat to the extreme!Ok, not a beach find, but strange indeed.
No upper jaw, eyes, good chuck of it's head missing. Innocent victim of BIG OTTER? Several suspects were witnessed in the vicinity.

Maybe the laces broke one too many timesNot beach related, but if you zoom in those kind of look like wading boots.
Anyone lose a pair on Capital Hill?
