When I was very young (1950s) my father took me to see the Little Red Lighthouse on the Hudson River below the Geo. Washington Bridge off the Northern tip of Manhattan. The lighthouse was "famous" due to the children's book about the bridge and the lighthouse, so it was a place that kids wanted to see.
While there, he showed me that there were seine nets in the river which were used by Shad fishers to catch the migration. Sadly, as time went on, the river became much more polluted and the Shad run disappeared. It's good to see that the tradition of fishing the Shad run continues. Maybe not in the Hudson, but still good to see.

Now, I understand that the Hudson is much cleaner and that you can catch Striped Bass off the piers in lower Manhattan. Clearly, you would not want to eat them, but worth the effort in my opinion.

Hudson River Shad netted under the George Washington Bridge. Shad fillets held on oak planks with strips of bacon and roofing nails. The best part was shad roe cooked in bacon grease. Early 1980's.

I hear under the Trenton Makes bridge can be lights out ....
I fished for them in the Connecticut and the Merrimac rivers.
