NFR RIP Mark Lanegan

Non-fishing related
His voice was deep dark and full of soul.

Love some screaming trees. Heard one of their songs on the radio today. That must have been why.

I was very sad to see Mark Lanegan passed away. I always loved his stuff, but liked him particularly because, during a Lolapalooza I attended in Vancouver, WA many decades ago, he namechecked my favorite Portland band, The Wipers, and particularly their singer/guitarist, Gregg Sage.

Coincidentally, The Wipers' original drummer, the great Sam Henry, also died a couple days ago.

I’ve not heard any details about his death, but that is sad news. He was young, had good insights and an awesome voice!

I got on stage and stood right next to him as he sang I Nearly Lost you. It didn’t phase him, he Just kept singing. I waived at my buddies and jumped back into the crowd.

He was super cool.

This is definitely a sad loss. Lanegan was an underrated singer that didn't quite get the same attention that other Seattle (I'm counting Ellensburg as Seattle-adjacent) front-men had during the early 90's but you could tell he was broadly respected given the number of collaborations he had. The Screaming Trees were one of my favorite bands to come out of that era. Whiskey for the Holy Ghost was an amazing debut solo album that holds up well. Some of my favorite tracks from the Mad Season's Above album are the ones with both Lane Staley and Mark Lanegan - both haunting voices in their own way. May they rest in peace.

His covid battle was really something. Read about it in excerpts from his book last year, 'Devil in a Coma'.
Months in a hospital.

I believe I read where he also had kidney issues.
Two tough issues to deal with at the same time.

I alway liked this tune a lot.

Glad to see Mark recognized here. I just about choked, when I heard about it on KEXP this morning. I remember wanting to buy the first Screaming Trees album when I was in High School, but my budget only allowed for used LP's and there was no way to find that album used. I just wasn't going to fork over the $7.99 for a new one. Still, I eventually picked up most of his albums on vinyl and CD, and never let them go. Come to think of it, I was listening to him before Nirvana and Soundgarden.

The Winding Sheet was his debut solo. Whiskey was the follow up.
