Pyramid Lake

Two weeks I made a trip to Pyramid Lake. The setting is beautiful and so are the fat fish! The fish come in sizes, you know, like T-shirts. A Small is 3-5 pounds. A Medium is 5-10 pounds. A Large is 10-15 pounds and an X-Large is over 15 pounds. I got fish in all four sizes. Dang, I felt very fortunate! I have done a lot of Chironomid fishing through the decades. It was a surprise to me that almost all of the fish I caught were on a Chironomid under an indicator. I'm feeling very grateful.

Before we moved to Seattle I would drive over the Sierras to fish Pyramid. I always waded and did alright. Never could get into the ladder thing. Attached is a watercolor I painted of a Pyramid cut.

Don't get to excited about being on a boat. The Tribe has closed the lake for all boats due to water levels. No word on how long they expect it to be closed. Now I don't know if this applies to shore launched pontoons but power boats are out for now.

Amazing to me that big boy would take a small chronomid like that, I'd think he'd have transitioned onto larger sized protein

The old saying “elephants eat peanuts’…

Once we had a couple decent fish in the box, we pulled in all the large trolling lures and put out a small aku lure as we approached a bid pile…of course the third largest marlin i ever hooked ate it…

Goes to show that caloric efficiency is the name of the game in growing big fish. Hard to beat lazily swimming around sucking chironomids off your gill gill rakers as you breathe. Super cool!

I lived in Carson City for 12 years and used to fish Pyramid from the shore. My favorite way to fish it was indo on the drop offs. Super cool place

Which class of fish fought the best and least?

They thought the original strain was extinct but they found fish that matched the genetic makeup on pilot peak on the Utah border. The summit lake strain is what we were catching the mid 2000’s and before. Thd pilot peak strain (or original pyramid lake strain) is a beast! They fight like a pissed off steelhead. The summit fish don’t fight near as well….Check out the pilot peak story it’s pretty cool
