Puget Sound

And burning them isn’t allowed these days.
Lots of things “aren’t allowed” but sometimes a person just has to be like Vanilla Ice—“If there was a problem, Yo, I’ll solve it.” And they tell their children to put on their bigboy pants (Carhartts with fatwood and matches, imported long matches, in the cargo pockets), and to climb out the master bedroom window, and jump into a pile of windblown tumbleweeds. And to push those thorny sumbitches into the street and “make it disappear” in a puff of smoke, as they say. Go help out the shut-in neighbor lady down the street, too, since we’re a community that solves problems together after all. 🔥

Did a little squidding with @Kfish today. Took us a few hours to be happy with our catch before moving over to SRC.

Nearby SRC grounds were a mess due to the floods and king tides. Dirty water and lots of debris ranging in size from whole trees to pine needles and bark scraps. Water clarity was not great as well. Caught a couple of small SRC and then we decided to just call it quits to fish another day. This was the “fish of the day” 🤣.

Calamari tacos for dinner tonight….

@Matt B - you must not be too familiar with tumbleweeds; they're thistle like with sharp stickers so jumping into that pile might not be much fun after the fact! ;-)
Couple years ago I was fishing a Seeps lake and was in a tiny bay casting at shore structure when I heard a weird commotion behind me in the water. Turned around to find a large dust devil coming fast across the lake straight at me... with a single, 3-foot-across tumbleweed caught up in it. It was whisking the surface like it was scrambling eggs. I didn't have time or room to get out of the way, so I did a quick batten-down and tucked myself into my own lap as best I could! Much swearing & laughing as it smacked the snot out of me for about 10 seconds.
Glad I was wearing long pants and a sunshirt! Got out with just a few scratches.

Ouch!

Lots of folks out squidding, took a while to find a good sized school to catch them consistently. Could have gotten more but this was more than enough.

Jason’s boat is now floating modern art.

Vietnamese stuffed squids tonight with congee. Tried to replicate the way my grandma used to make for us, with ground pork, glass noodles, onions, mushrooms and spices inside. Turned out pretty good!

No fishing today but I needed to get out of the house. Nice to see some snow in the Olympics. Kudos to this dude. 🥶

I needed to get out, so headed south. The wind forecast didn’t look great, but what the hell. I was tired of being cooped up.
Got two hook ups on the first beach, but bailed as the wind waves were making the water dirty plus a lot of debris.
Relocated and ended up the four cutts and one rezzie to hand. Not much size wise.
Lost one nice size golden jumbo after a couple nice jumps. Ran into @Steve_S and he caught some nice fish. Good seeing you Steve.
Today was the first day it actually felt cold this fall. The wind was chilly. 🥶 😂
I did foul hook a smelt on the canal. I’ve seen them there before, just not very often. It would take a pretty good size cutt to choke one of them down.

That smelt is a very pretty fish! So chrome.

Slow day on the sound this morning for @Kfish and me. Windy and rainy. A bit of chop on the water. Not often you take water over the bow fishing many of the winter SRC spots we frequent but it did happen few times this morning. Fish were also scarce. Just a handful to net between the two of us. Some honey holes produced nary a tap today. Very unusual. Weather, water conditions and blah tide did not help.

We did manage a SRC/rezzie double. My contribution was the little rezzie. Lou got the nice SRC. One other small SRC and a couple other lost fish rounded out my day.

Hit the Sound for a short 2 -2.5 hour session. Started rainy and windy. Rain turned to sun by the end but the wind was persistent. Looking forward to some calmer forecasts wind wise over the next few days.

Crappy start to the outing. Accidental pic putting the phone back in the holder. Surprisingly, had to put on the shades on about an hour after this was taken.

Fish of the day. Pic does not do it justice. Solid 18 I’d say and thick. Put a salmonesqe bend in the 6 weight.

IMG_2204.jpeg

The rest were in this class, solid fish for the most part.

Tried out the new PDF. The NRS Chinook. I have been using a self inflating vest for years but wanted to try something new. Especially for solo trips like today. If I go in incapacitated, I’d don’t want my life to depend on auto inflation. I forget who started a thread on these awhile back. Maybe @Evan B. Thanks to whoever it was. I’m a fan. I wore this with a t-shirt, flannel, micro puffy and wading jacket and it did not encumber my casting or stripping at all. Even with the bow mount controller hanging down off my neck.

Hit the sound again today for SRC. Committed to exploring new spots for most of the day before hitting a couple known areas. Of the 6 I hit, 5 were duds though I’m not crossing all of them of the potential list. Even the two reliable spots I hit at the end of the day were tough fishing. One blanked me. I cannot remember the last time that happened on that beach. Not even a tap! Ehh water movement where I was fishing, bright sunshine and flat conditions probably did not help.

The one new spot that did pan out was solid. Hooked six fish all of which were healthy and feisty including one very solid fish.
