Puget Sound

I caught a fresh water clam on the Snohomish drift fishing, it hit just like a steelhead, lol.

How did it fight? 😉

Just an fyi, it looks like no pink fishing in 8-2 this summer due to low returns to the Stilly.
All other areas should have a 2 + 2 limit.
MA 5 winter chinook will be closed in 2026 which will be tough on the Sekiu area and MA 6 will see a reduction of 3K chinook this summer.
This is as of this morning via the NOF update.

and found my line must have drifted into an oyster’s gape and gotten firmly clamped. The sucker wouldn’t let go, and I had to do a bit of shell sculpting to free my line. Sorry little buddy!

Oyster flossing with pearl beads can be damn expensive....

Spending a couple days bopping around new to me areas, this time I headed south instead of north. Fished this beach on the outgoing this morning for nada and then on the incoming this afternoon for a few plus a couple misses all this size. Chum fry everywhere whereas a couple weeks ago up north I saw zero. Fun stuff.

Anyway, this was a new one for me. I visited a friend in muddy lower reaches of MA13 over the weekend. Saturday AM I met a very cool guy at a public boat launch and had a fun morning out on his boat. Later that day at my friend’s I saw a jumper off the beach, and since my rigged rod was right there figured it was worth a cast or two. But I hung solidly up on the bottom, and found my line must have drifted into an oyster’s gape and gotten firmly clamped. The sucker wouldn’t let go, and I had to do a bit of shell sculpting to free my line. Sorry little buddy! View attachment 149404View attachment 149405
Did you eat it.? I pack a shucking knife, yum..

Regarding release mortality of sea-run cutthroat. As I recall from the literature typical with trout estimates the release mortality with flies typically are in the 5% or lower range (interestingly the is not a large difference between barded and barbless hooks). Much of the mortality happens from the hook causing bleeding. Hooking the fish in the gills, tongue, eyes, etc. (critical areas) often cause bleeding and increased mortality. With careful handling and a bit of luck mortality levels could be around 2%.

I strongly recommend that to reduce potential mortalities that if the fish in hooked in any of the critical areas that the angler do not attempt to remove the fly, rather snip the leader and quick and gently release the fish. Do not attempt to "revive" the fish. When I was doing a lot cutthroat fishing (mostly in rivers) I would keep track of the potential mortalities of the fish I handled each year, it usually ranged between 1 and 3%.

Had a great day on the water yesterday in MA13. It was a 5th annual guided trip with Capt Dave Dietrich (Adventure Angling). Fished from around 8-12:30. Water was calm, hardly any wind and lots of blue in the sky. Between my buddy and I we landed together around 53 or so and lost about half that number. Had some really nice ones that got away that'll bug ya for days. Nice quality cutts with a few healthy rezzies in the mix. Felt good to make a connection after being skunked these last handful of beach trips in the North Sound.

Might be time to get a boat 😁

Nice man, that's a ton of action. I got skunked yesterday in the north sound as well. I went out with Dave when I first started fly fishing in 23 as recommended by @Nick Clayton and it was a great time. Super nice to access new spots and get away from the public beaches. I keep thinking about getting a pedal kayak but we will see.

@Stonedfish that sucks about 8-2. I live 3 minutes from a beach that was flooded with pinks in 23. In fact, seeing all the pink slime jump everywhere on a dog walk was what got me into fly fishing.

8-2 will still be open for coho. Should have mentioned that. Just no pink fishing.

I would think they would give us more days for July in MA 9 considering it’s a pink year. A good portion of the pink run enters Admiralty Inlet during those last 2 weeks of July.

So are they going to give us stuck on the beach guys 3 more days in July for MA9 this year?😳

Unfortunately only three days in July this year in MA 9, so no coho fishing on non chinook days again.
Stay tuned, people are working on that.

Is it no pinks allowed at all or just not the 2 + 2 limit that everywhere else is getting? From the WDFW blog post:

"With the expected strong return of pinks, WDFW added two additional pinks to the daily limit for all inner-marine areas except Marine Area 8–2 (Ports Susan and Gardner) through Sept. 30."

To me that reads that pinks are allowed, just not the additional pinks added to the daily limit. I could be wrong though, that's the only information I had to go off of, wasn't sure if there was another document floating around somewhere that had more detailed information on 8-2.
