PNW Fly Fishing Semi-Official Swap, Shop, Fish & Eat - May 17, 2025

I wish I could make it. I will be in Lakeside on Ten Mile Lake near Coos Bay/Reedsport at my good fishing buddies place for a man’s group weekend. I am fortunate to be in this group - honorary member and the youngster at 57!

I am counting on more PNWFF outings and the chance to meet many of you.

Evan

Like clockwork, there's a beautiful ocean window opening up for halibut fishing right when this gathering kicks off. You guys better be worth it! 😂

Maybe think of it as a good deed you are doing for all the boats going halibut fishing that weekend? And hopefully there is a little karma in it for you.

Plus you are a better person than me. My wife and daughter are now going out of town that weekend. While I really was looking forward to a day trip to the meetup and meeting other PNW members, a window to go fishing somewhere a bit further away from home on a May weekend is really hard to pass up.

Well, I can only tag out 6 halibut per year, and the better fishing happens later into June and July... so I'm telling myself it's for the best.

I hadn't planned on bringing a tying kit, but I might change my mind.
I think I can get something down similar to what I took to the fly tying expo...but smaller. I should be able to find room (which is at a premium with my baby Prius).

My plan:

Arrive Friday afternoon.

Make pizza Friday evening. Probably not enough to feed everyone. But I'll shoot for like 4 pies. Beyond that would be way more work than I want to do 😂

Saturday: leaving that all up to the crew. We'll potluck I'm assuming mid day. Tie stuff, swap stuff, some will go fishing, whatever else.

I personally will need to make my exit late Saturday due to a growing list of various things I can't get out of on Sunday.

I can bring several pounds of smoked salmon and smoked salmon candy, but outside that all of the meals we have at my house are made from scratch.

Happy to do some prep cooking. What should I bring to the potluck? Mostly this time of year for proteins I’ve got salmon, steelhead, cod, and maybe a couple pounds of ground venison left.

Oh, and I’ve got about six very basic tying vises I could bring to the swap if anyone wants. Some ridiculous vegan parents went on a rampage and killed our school’s fishing club, and so far no fishing charity/nonprofit wants them.
I'd love one. I occasionally have friends that want to learn/try and it would be nice to have a second vise.

Maybe Saturday evening would be better for the potluck? I usually eat a very light lunch but a big dinner, and if the weather's nice I'll probably be on the water during the day. I'll have an extra seat on my boat.

I'm going to make a Rotel Velveeta cheesy dip with chips to share, plus ingredients and foil for hobo packets on the fire coals. Maybe a couple packs of hot dogs. I'll also have a cooler with some beers and nonalcohol cans, plus a bottle. I'll also bring some coffee and a percolator and oat milk.

Yeah possibly. But just for my own sake, hopefully not too late. Largely because 8pm is my typical bed time, and I need to drive home Saturday night ;)
