I want a blackthorn walking stick so much.Didn't know there was any color of bamboo other than green.
You're going to color the grip? I think that contrast in the picture looks pretty good.
My understanding is you're not going to split and shave it to make an old school rod, but just going to clean it up and add the real seat and guides, right ?
Shame we can't find Blackthorne that easily for traditional walking sticks.
You wouldn’t believe how many different types of bamboo there are. I have several other “black” bamboo ugly stick rods that aren’t as black as this species…..Didn't know there was any color of bamboo other than green.

Still planning on staining the grip black. Correct on fishing it the way it is, adding guides, grip and reelseat. I have a bunch of others dating back 4-6 years, they surprisingly didn’t get brittle with age. I fished one today and C&R’d several 15”-17” feisty rainbows! This rod I even scarfed a different tip section on…. I never heard of Blackthorn, where does it grow? Is it a deciduous hardwood? I make different kinds of reelseats with all kinds of woods. I’m a retired carpenter/woodworker with sawdust flowing in my veins!Didn't know there was any color of bamboo other than green.

Blackthorn grows in Ireland, at least.Still planning on staining the grip black. Correct on fishing it the way it is, adding guides, grip and reelseat. I think it would look better in dark green
On the other hand, say I have a really nice stick, straight, colored up deep and dark, how much would you want for turning it into an object of fishable beauty? Thanks for the info! Your bamboo is safe from me, I live a ways south of you! One of several coats of dark wood wax applied……
Got a picture of it? We can talk……On the other hand, say I have a really nice stick, straight, colored up deep and dark, how much would you want for turning it into an object of fishable beauty?
Geez, don't give Steve your address.
I could see him repelling out of a helicopter in the middle of the night with pruners in hand.
You would wake up with only a few bamboo nubs sticking up.
