New black ugly stick!

Didn't know there was any color of bamboo other than green.

You're going to color the grip? I think that contrast in the picture looks pretty good.

My understanding is you're not going to split and shave it to make an old school rod, but just going to clean it up and add the real seat and guides, right ?

Shame we can't find Blackthorne that easily for traditional walking sticks.

I want a blackthorn walking stick so much.

You wouldn’t believe how many different types of bamboo there are. I have several other “black” bamboo ugly stick rods that aren’t as black as this species…..

Still planning on staining the grip black. Correct on fishing it the way it is, adding guides, grip and reelseat. I have a bunch of others dating back 4-6 years, they surprisingly didn’t get brittle with age. I fished one today and C&R’d several 15”-17” feisty rainbows! This rod I even scarfed a different tip section on…. I never heard of Blackthorn, where does it grow? Is it a deciduous hardwood? I make different kinds of reelseats with all kinds of woods. I’m a retired carpenter/woodworker with sawdust flowing in my veins!

Blackthorn grows in Ireland, at least.

I got black bamboo in my garden. It starts off green year one, turns brown year 1.5 and depending on the exposure will go black after that. As it gets to year 4-ish it starts to turn gray as the 'boo dies. If you cut it when it's black it slowly goes back to a deep brown and then gray on a similar schedule, without a neat wearing pattern, it's kind of heterogenous in its color change. It's pretty solid and springy for a year or two but then gets fragile for a heavy load- if you store it outside and in the weather. I imagine you could probably keep it black with little sun and some stain to help... It does look cool when it is doing well.

One dude came by my house and wanted to cut a little to start his own. I am pretty certain it's not my yard you got that stick from.

You gotta watch it though, it wants to spread.... of my bamboo this is the only one that has tried to legit spread, probably because it's the only one I water in summer. It sends aggressive roots out under our brick parking space, so every year I have to pry up a bunch of bricks and get the axe out and some new sand and keep the f*&*-er in check.

The other culms are easy to keep in line with no summer watering, no mulch and a bit of spade work.

Thanks for the info! Your bamboo is safe from me, I live a ways south of you! One of several coats of dark wood wax applied……
