Mushroom and other wild edible foraging

Took a trip down to Hood River with some friends to visit a buddy of ours for their birthday. The person responsible for getting me into the world of mushroom foraging. Our hope was to get on some porcini's and matsutake's but we were either too early or too late. Very dry.

We turned our attention to looking for white chanterelles. Between the 4 of us, we landed around 12lbs all together with a few bonus lobsters.

It was a bittersweet visit as our friend has been living with ALS for the last 7 years or so. His legs are still very capable of getting him around and once we parked at a spot, he was gone. 😂

Season should be picking up after some rain. Headed to the Olympic Peninsula this weekend to look for golden chanterelles + ride some bikes. Not necessarily in that order.

Nice haul! Whites are superior to golden chanterelles IMO. So fragrant.

Spend an hour tromping around the woods on the weekend, and find one, potentially deadly mushroom.

Walk the dogs in the backyard after work and find a nice patch of legit morels popping next to our power pole. Go figure!

I have been looking for thread about deadly mushrooms, I want to ask that How have deadly mushrooms been used historically in medicine, folklore, or even myths?

I chose an adventure day over beach fishing yesterday. Checked out a new-to-me creek that was still open. To my surprise when I arrived the creek was filled with spawning pinks. Made my way upstream where the salmon weren't present and had no to little action for trout. The hike upstream was a bit exhausting so I made my way into the woods and wandered the creeks edge on the way back down. Within 5 minutes of the hike I stumbled on to this stump with 3 clusters of chickens. Score.

Found a few bonus lobsters and one early, lonely chanterelle. Not a complete skunk session. Might have to go back after a few days of this rain.

If any one of ya are in the Edmonds area, I have some extra, really fresh COW. I didn't harvest it all but did take a little extra for neighbors/friends. 👍🏻

A few from the weekend. Hard not to stop for a breakfast sandwich from Sultan Bakery.

Wanted more Porcinis but I'm either too early or too late. Only scored two which was enough for a risotto for the fam.

Lobsters are showing up in full force.

A few shaggy manes that were left behind.

One unopened free-range IPA. Left it for someone else to enjoy.

Haven't checked my chanterelle spots yet. Hoping for something good after this second wave of rain.

Wow, those lobsters must be pretty tough if you need a saw! ;)
Maybe I don’t need to cut them? I don’t know the real protocol since I’m a complete novice but I was driving along and saw it and believe it or not couldn’t find a knife in the truck (or my pocket).

Plucking them from the ground is completely fine. What you did is fine too. Less cleaning at the end of the day.

Are there any you should avoid plucking for any reason?

Hoping to find some around here. Last year I found a large host Russula. How'd you cook yours?

Not that I'm aware of.

There's a mindset out there that plucking mushrooms will prevent them from growing back the next year. That is not true. Some I pluck and some I will cut at the base. The ones I pluck I'll clean the dirt off the base on the spot. It's all about keeping your mushrooms clean when you're collecting more than one.
