Re: Montana Fly Fishing

I enjoy civilization...and smaller scared-y-cat bears...but the down side is that the best fly fishing seems to come with potential maiming, mortal danger and possible death...I'll take my risks on the freeway.

If you go back enjoy yourself, Skip. And do be cautious on the I90 . . . my last trip back, I saw a sign that stated :"Clean Restrooms Ahead." I must have cleaned a half-dozen restrooms before I arrived back home. Add extra travel time to your trip . . .

I've been fishing Montana since 1994 or so and have seen exactly one bear while fishing. It was a grizzly that crossed the river 100 yards upstream of where I was fishing.. I went back downstream.
Year before last I was camped at valley Garden on the Madison( close to town) it was a Friday or Saturday night and a bunch of partyers came down and made a bunch noise for a while then calmed down. An hour later a car comes screaming I to the campground and an argument breaks out between two men. They seemed to be arguing over a woman. One sentence we heard clearly " you wouldn't be saying that if you didn't have that gun..

I'll take my chances with thr grizz next time..

Yeah Rob get that! Was hoping for griz fishing stories. I have only had black bear interactions while fishing the coast. Ironically it was fall sea run fishing on the Bear River inland out of Chinook. I do not normally speak of where online but in this case Weyerhaeuser- yet another gated closure. Apparently memberships are sold through the gated access. It was my favorite fall fishery for 30 years. Oh well . As far as my bear interaction I did some stupid things that in the end worked out like a standing bear about 250 lbs standing 15 feet away in the brush sniffing with interest at the nice 18” cut I had just landed. My dog was timid and huddled at my feet and in that split secong i fumbled carefully and found a firm clod od clay and chucked it hitting said bear. In the belly with a hollow thud.. it dropped down and canonballed away… the next few seconds were spent muttering Oh shit … and “ you dumb arse”

Starting a dirt clod fight with a bear is a bold move worthy of your moniker, sir.

When we encountered that bear our dog was acting out too. She wouldn't listen to our commands. Wouldn't sit still kept swimming where we were trying to fish.. then out pops the bear... We listened to her after that.

If you ever need help planning a trip to MT let me know..

I've been living here in Montana since 2007.I haven't seen any bears here. I might of heard one on the Ruby one time. I heard some woofs and I beat feet out of where I was fishing at. Not to many trees on the upper Ruby. But lots of brush for anything to hide in. Heck, I haven't even seen any Rattlesnakes and the area is supposed to be loaded with them. All I ever see are Deer, Elk and Moose.

My wife and I had the same thing happen to us on the klickitat. Labs wouldn't stay out of the river, and our youngest tried to crawl into mommy's arms while she was in waist deep water. We didn't know what to think until we saw the black bear clamour up the hillside.

something interesting to note about this picture.

this appears to be boats waiting to get out after the end of the day.

notice the time of day. still full light out it's mid afternoon maybe 3 or 4 pm

what does that mean??? The rest of the afternoon the river is deserted given the number of boats there and the looks of the trees I am gonna guess this is Salmon fly hatch time.
All of these boats are missing the best fishing of the day. My best salmonfly fishing is always late afternoon into evening

conclusion? ignore the crowds, adjust your day to miss the worst of it and you can still have a great day.
