Kiribati in lockdown.

I know a lot of people who were planning on going there this spring. Key word now is likely the "were" part.

Not good for the small communities!

Thanks for this. I was just this afternoon chatting with someone about a prospective trip in January, 2023. I understand why an island would be ultracautious, but dang, these COVID shutdowns are so damaging to so many...those poor folks on Christmas Island who rely on the tips and $$ from others visiting their island.

It will open up soon enough. They are likely eating more fish though.

I'd sure like to go back to Kiritimati. I don't suppose "The Shark Place" is still The Shark Place? The meals were GREAT. The guides were GREAT! I hope the people of the island, who were wonderful, aren't too hard-hit.

Sadly Sharks Place is a dilapidated mess full of rats and crabs. They built the Crystal Beach Lodge next to it a few years ago, but it is no longer hosting fly anglers (since 2019) due to a family dispute. The relatively new buildings there have an abandoned look to them last time I drove by in late January 2020.

The people on the island are still getting supplies and aid. Construction projects near London have made housing for more people from Tarawa. I hope that fish poaching has not become a problem since the pandemic.

Two years of this now. At some point the attempt at prevention/control is going to create more problems than the actual virus. This is not in any way saying the virus isn't real or any of the other nonsense. Just pointing out that even though the restrictions may have been put in place with the best intentions in the world those restrictions are not without consequences of their own.

It would be far, far worse, unfortunately people's selfishness is enabling this to continue. Soon enough all the deniers will be dead though.

Was planning this upcoming fall... but planning on going to the alternate... Belize

2022 is not a good time to plan a trip to Christmas Island, the virus is a recent arrival for them.

i made two trips down there in the early 80s. it was a third world country. not a paved road anywhere on the island and very few residents. but the government kept sending more and more people to CXI. a friend went down a couple of years ago and shared the images he had. it is no longer a third world country with way too many people now, IMHO. yes, it can be exciting fishing but there are so many other places that are also exciting i would not hold my breath on a trip down there. try CR, BC as two relatively close places with outstanding fishing. i really want to get to Guatemala for big blue marlin but that country seems to be in a bit of turmoil so i am just passing on that dream, at least in the short run.

I went in 2018 and the paved road went only so far and then it was gravel. There are a lot of people now and the government had plans to send ten thousand more from Tarawa because the ocean was rising. Folk were worried because there was no infrastructure, little water, and no jobs for the new people. Haven't heard much since due to the virus but I'm still going back sometime if I get the opportunity.

yep, the government in Tarawa keeps sending people as over population seems to be a problem on that island. the republic covers some 2,000+ miles of ocean and obscure islands, most uninhabited. just glad i went when i did so long ago and i have no desire to repeat at this point in my life.
