I don't know if anyone else has noticed ...

Was just over at WFF. The traffic has fallen off to almost nothing. The dude that bought that site will be pulling his hair out soon. From just wondering where everybody went.

Main thing going on over there is a pissing match one intellectual property. This place is far more fun.

cheers

I wouldn't be against industry sponsorships like WFF used to have before the ads got turned on. Maybe that's something we'll look into down the road someday.

Seems reasonable to me. I know it does take money to keep sites up and running. I honestly didn't notice the ads that much on WFF until this site was up and running.

I don’t quite understand that whole argument. I understand intellectual property but not the fuss being made. I’m a photographer. I figured out a long time ago if I didn’t want folks stealing my images and all the hassles of getting someone to stop using an image I should probably not post it on an open forum. Common sense?

I think it's one of those things that matters more to some people and less to others.

There is some truth on both sides. A forum is only what it's members make it and a company that only exists to get revenue off the member's content isn't something that some folks are going to love. But on the other hand, a forum has to have permission to use the content that the community makes. If people can just delete everything and make a mess of the history, what's the point in having a forum? Some of my greatest delights online have been searching for info and accidentally finding a forum thread that I participated in 10 years ago. I'd hate to lose that.

Agreed. I was late to the party on both, but the waterproof socks and Bobo threads are/were very amusing.

Yeah, but Dustin is arguing they will/could steal his ”professional work”. I have had to have sites take down some of my images that were essentially stolen from me. In every instance it only took an email or two. Like I stated before I quickly learned if I didn’t want someone else to use any of my images or the hassle of stopping it I shouldn’t post it to a public forum. On the other hand sometimes having an image used by others can be beneficial and flattering if proper credit is given.

I let people and organizations use my cartoons for non-commercial endeavors... as long as they simply ask me first and give credit to where they first saw the image -- usually a magazine.

I keep my lady amherst and peacock quills in a Gene Trump cartoon coffee cup on the corner of my desk

and it'll probably stay that way for a long time. we'll open it up to donations, and if that keeps the lights on, then we're good.
Let me know if that changes. I’d like to be one of the first to advertise please!

You might not know this yet but something big just happened in fly fishing. You see, fish catching ideas aren’t new to me. In fact, followers of my services see an average return of 480% greater catch rates.

But every so often, I’ll issue a rare β€˜Double Catch’ recommendation: a chance for fishers who missed the boat on a great fishing tip to get in again…and a chance to double fishing catch rates.

Some people are catching 20,000% more fish. Usually these are increases of steelhead catches but trout tips abound too.

So like I said, let me know when we’re ready and I’ll advertise my knowledge for the community. It’s a service I have a hard time withholding.

This is the first (and last) time the words 'intellectual property' and 'krusty' will ever be used in the same sentence.

I suspect the very large corporation that bought the site (and owns hundreds of others) is actually quite used to this phenomena. Internet search engines will be directing FF websurfers there for years. Some will join, others will lurk, and most probably take a brief look and leave...but ALL will exposed to advertising and/or provide valuable market niche clicks to the commercial enterprises VS sells data to.

Interesting business model; acquire well established web forums, harvest its commercial value, and move on if the original withers, all the while acquiring additional established forums.
