"Fifty-four forty or fight!" was a popular slogan used during the Oregon Question, a dispute between the United States and Great Britain over the Oregon Country. It represented the position of some Americans who believed that the U.S. should claim the entire Oregon Territory, extending to the southern boundary of Russian Alaska at 54° 40' north latitude, or be prepared to fight for it.
